That's strange because my tax refunds show as "federal tax refund".

Anywho... doesn't matter. Yes it's very likely the money comes from the Fed Govmt but I still think the easiest way for the OP to find out where it originates from is calling the financial institution.
Perhaps is depends on the bank. MY BMO account showed my refund as CANADA RIT/RIF

It does depend on the institution. For me, regardless of the source of funds (payroll, tax refund, travel claim, reimbursement), it only shows "EFT Credit Canada".

That's why he has to determine where the funds actually came from, rather than assuming that it's a GST transaction.

Could the CRA have made an error?
Maybe, but who cares??

close the bank account & hope they don't track you down to get it back! (unless you're honest)

LOL - and possibley end up in jail.

Best course of action is either a) inform them or b) let it sit there and collect interest and wait for them to contact you.

If they are rebating me 5 digits, I'm all for the HST.
It will pay itself back in 10-20 years but I could use the 10K + now.

So you got a deposit in your account between $10,000 and $99,000?

And you think it might be your GST?

Also Why is the amount a secret? Its not like its your income or amount you paid for something.
