Great walk through - I managed to get Slim ICS + Semaphore working on my Galaxy S. I had one question - I skipped the unlocking step. I have the nv_data.bin file but I can't run the unlocker program as I don't have a graphics card (I get an error). Will the Galaxy_S Unlock from market (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....galaxysunlock) work if I'm already on SlimICS? Or is there any other way to get an unlock code (without buying one)?

if you make your nv_data.bin available (upload to a free site like mediafire.com or something), I will crack it and give you back the unlock code. 100% free. PM if you want to do this.

But as others have said, the unlockers in the play store work just as well.

Have you tried using a non-telus sim? I was under the impression that you would be unlocked if you are already on SlimICS, but I may be wrong.

In any case, I am pretty sure you can use the unlock app from market.

I eventually jumped on ICS for this phone, Slim ROM + Semaphore Kernel runs much smoother than stock gingerbread, glad I went through the trouble!

Put in the sim card after the phone has been unlocked. You don't need to flash a new rom before trying out the phone.

I have another problem though - I am on Virgin mobile, but on SlimRom, the galaxy S only sees the bell network, not Virgin (when I do a scan, I can see Bell, Rogers, and one called 302220 which I assume is Telus/Koodo). I know Bell and Virgin run on the same network, but my old android phone used to say Virgin and not bell. An I connected to the virgin mobile network? WIll I be charged roaming if it says bell?

Thanks for the guide. I followed it to root and unlock my phone. After that, it gets really confusing for a noob like me.

Got mine running ICS now from the howto on the xda site.

Unfortunately, perkas site is down, so I have no modem installed, so no signal. lol

what modem have people flashed? I flashed UGKC1 as stated in the howto, but no signal (in fact baseband version has nothing listed)

*sigh*, I cant seem to restore my backed up EFS folder, file explorere wont let me.... guess its off to google...

well, that was sort of fun, the first time I did it, /efs was full and i couldnt restore my files.

So I used odin to reflash to froyo, used kies to get back to gb, and now back to slimICS with a working modem and working efs.

I think you have to restore your EFS as soon as you can. at least thats what I did the second time.

edit: now that things are working good, I like slimICS so far, as fast, if not faster than gb.

I didn't restore my EFS, everything's working but the GPS

Here's my setup, I have no idea what I should do next. I don't even know if the GPS was working before all this.
radio: radio-cm-7-galaxys-kc1-signed
ROM: ICS_Passion_v13.1_RC1.1_build2
Kernel: Semaphore_ICS_1.2.6s

I get like 5+ locks in a matter of seconds now if I'm outside. This with no GPS tweaks except for whatever slimics had in its default. But I have read elsewhere GPS can be flake.. good luck

I fixed my GPS problem

Long story short, I want back to stock rom and it wasn't working properly either
Finally I ended up with:
Modem: UGKC1 (I'm on Bell)
ROM: DarkyRom 11
Kernel: Semaphore 1.2.5s

All that was probably unrelated.

I edited to etc\gps.conf file as described in here
You really need to change the file permission to <rw-r--r--> for it to work.

I had a problem with a T-Mobile T959 and it got me into download mode so I could flash a stock bootloader and Froyo.

Rooting and loading on a custom rom will increase the speed of your phone by quite a bit. I had an old Telus HTC Desire with GB. Once I switch from the stock Telus GB to Cyanogen 7, the phone's screen doesn't lag the way it used to. A custom rom also allowed me to removed all of the excess apps too.
