Has anybody tried a mobile mechanic?

Just wondering if anybody has actually used any of these services or know of anybody who has experienced a 'mobile' mechanic's service.

I guess the plus side is you don't have to spend time going to a shop. But I would guess their work is limited to more basic stuff due to lack of equipment/lift. Also, I'm guessing some may not be licensed or insured whatsoever, but cheaper due to that, or lower over head costs (no rent payments).

Also, if something does go wrong, would there be any sort of recourse or anything? Or likely just a risk one must take.

Nothing specific at the moment. Just a good 'just in case' or 'next time I need this done' thing. I have a couple of older cars so basically its also a matter of prioritizing what may need to be done (smaller stuff vs things that would likely be better suited for a shop with a lift) and easier to work with that doesn't require all the stuff new cars need, so a mobile mechanic may be better suited for that.

I also do have some more 'heavy work' for a Astro Van but will likely take it to a shop as I have to get it check to see if a bolt behind the power steering pump has broke and reinforce the engine bracket, which would then likely require some welding 'expertise'.

I had an 84 Scirocco and this would have been in the late eighties... guy came in the middle of winter (it was minus 40 F or C (no difference at that temp) outside) and did my clutch. Impressed the heck out of me. The guy was very good and it worked well because the car wasn't mobile. I think it as a fair bit cheaper than a regular shop as well as he had much lower overhead.

I'd do it again.
