So, I have a dead p4 3.06 and wondering if I could RMA this, I have the HSF and some sort of reciept from a KEIT Computer in North York, Ontario.
Well, I posted on the BST forums a WTB thread for a 3.06 processor
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/showt...highlight=3.06
Sunny_X replied, I bought it off him for $170
it came dead so I've sent him a PM regarding that, hopefully he'll be courteous enough to help me out here.
Note that I just sent him a PM like 10 minutes ago so I don't know what actions are going to be taken.
Hopefully it doesn't end up with me being scammed $170 with a processor that can not be sent back for RMA for whatever reason

Being as they have a 3 yr warranty, and its unlikely that proc has been around for 3 yrs, you should be ok. But, I've never had to rma a cpu...

I had one or two RMA'd previously a few years ago. Intel, like all major manufacturers, have very good RMA. Get an RMA number. Then send in a defective one, they send you back a brand new sealed one. They'll also call you afterwards for a survey.

oh, and I don't think I needed a receipt but just check to make sure. Also mine were retail box. Don't know about the warranties and policy for OEM products.

Also if someone sold you a DOA item, they should at least cover the shipping costs to send for RMA. Unless it was you or your system that may have damaged it of course.

i don't think i'd be too upset about this issue until i know i've been flat out scammed =)
until then i'm sure a compromise will be reached, my main question now though, is how to communicate with intel other than their 900 number

Retail box processors have three year warranties. Intel is very good at replacing these processors.
OEM processors have no warranty through Intel. The warranty for the processor is provided by the OEM - that's the company it was purchased from.
The ONLY exception for OEM processors is if the retail store it was purchased from is out-of-business. Intel has a third party department that deals with these cases on a per-call basis.
Call Intel and give them the markings from the CPU. They can tell you immediately if it's a RB or OEM. (Another indicator is the HSF. If it's an Intel HSF, it's likely a RB unit unless someone took and OEM processor and gave you an Intel HSF).
