Hi,
We basically never use D batteries and only use one 9-volt battery for one of our smoke detectors. We use rechargeable AAs and AAAs for everything that requires them. So we've rationalized the fact that our "bad" battery use is one 9-volt per year, which we're OK with. But we recently bought a particular exercise machine that requires four D batteries to make the display work and to adjust the level of intensity. Since we bought it used, it had four Duracells in it already. Now they're running out and just after a few months! Man you have to love the wastefulness of batteries...but I digress -- anyway, we can rationalize one 9-volt per year as waste. But four Ds every few months or so? That's not so easy to write off. But to buy four rechargeable Ds plus an appropriate charger (at the cheapest I could find, which is at batterycanada.com) is about $60. That's not including shipping, of course. Honestly, the price of rechargeable Ds, 9-volts plus the charger for these types of batteries is what's been keeping us away from them.
I've never understood why the AAs and AAAs are everywhere with the chargers for a pretty decent price, but the others are way more expensive.
So, here's what I wanted to know -- does anyone know of any place where one can purchase four rechargeable Ds and an appropriate charger for maybe more like about $30 max? It would have to be online probably, as I'm in the Okanagan in B.C. in a pretty small place.
Alternatively, does anyone know how one could construct an AC adapter of some kind that would allow me to "energize" my exercise machine somehow with electricity, thus not using batteries at all?
Any help would be appreciated -- that display on the machine is getting awfully dim... :-)
The Hans

*Hate* Using Non-Rechargeable D Batteries, but Rechargeables *Way* Too Expensive

Thanks for this. Two issues though...the first is that I researched these things previously and apparently it just drains the AAs in no time. So I'd be recharging them every other exercise session or so. Secondly, one must pay with Paypal, which I will not deal with after some "issues" some years ago. Although the Paypal's the big one I must admit, as for that price and free shipping it would be worth trying out otherwise...

+1, Canada Computers sells just the adpaters as well:

If you look at a lot of rechargeable C and D batteries, you'll find that they have the same capacity as the AA cells - about 2000 mAH to 2500 mAH

Can you use any rechargeable AA batteries in those Eneloop D sleeves? Does anyone know? The best kit for us is the one at Costco, but we don't have a membership. At Canada Computer, they don't offer the same kit, but they do offer just the C and D sleeves. That would be fine if we could put any AA batteries in the sleeves. And Duracell AA rechargeables are on at Shopper's Drug Mart tomorrow and the next day, so we could stock up. :-)

I wouldn't expect the battery adapters to be causing any drain themselves if the batteries are not inside some electronic device since the adapters should just be an extension of metal on each end of the battery to make the AAs fit. The good thing if you get the Eneloops/white-topped duracells/white-topped PC-brand/white-topped LIFE brand batteries is that you'll have less of a self-discharge issue to begin with!

Btw - just re-read your original post and was wondering if you exercise equipment also requires it to be plugged in? (I wouldn't expect so if you need batteries for the display but you never know). If so, you should probably unplug it after you finish using it or hook it up to a power bar and switch off the power bar after use.

Really? I looked all over and all I could find was an area where you had to submit your credit card info in conjunction with getting/using a PayPal account. At least that was my impression. Could you provide a link from their site if you can for the area where you can just pay by credit card?

No, you don't need to have a paypal account. I don't and I bought stuff from DX many times.
There is no special page. It is the same page. Look carefully. They use paypal to process your credit card so that DX will not have your credit card number in their system because people may not (and should not) trust giving credit card number to a web site in foreign country.
Use "standard paypal checkout" and do not login to paypal in the next page. It is either or. You either provide credit card or login paypal.Last edited by gman; Jul 11th, 2009 at 02:16 PM.
