Pretty sure Walmart has this for $99 - last time I was there anyway.
edit: The walmart model might be different; however, they all do the same thing regardless.

Well, I personally own of these and I think theyre great. I buy the refill syrups when they go on sale and pay 1/3 of original cost, and I get my refill cartridges for about 18 dollars. Pretty affordable if you ask me.
The main bonus with this machine is not having to buy a ton of 12 packs of pop that take up unnecessary room and create waste.

Well I guess if you assume the starter gives you a 60L carbonator and a 1L bottle and no syrup.
at $139.99 for the carbonator or the $99.99 one (http://www.thebay.com/eng/home-small...-thebay/229588 - might need electricity? doens't explicitly say on the genesis) that's $100/60L = ~$1.67/L
Syrup is generally $6.99 for 12L so ~$0.58/L
a Replacement carbonator is $34.99 for 60L and so that's again ~$0.58
So, the initial $60L is ~$2.25/L ($4.50 for 2L) which is pricey. After 60L it's $1.16/L ($2.32 for 2L). I'm giving it in 2L scale kuz that's what I'd get if I were to run out and grab a bottle of pop.
It's not necessarily to save money as dragonkaoboy said but the device itself isn't too bad priced and kinda cool imo. BTW I'm also ignoring cost of water.
N.B think about it this way it saves you the trip to go to the store and buy a bottle... flip side is you gotta make it.

I wouldn't get this to make pop, but to make carbonated water (like Perrier), which I find expensive. After the initial cost, a 60L exchange refill is about $18-20, which is about $0.33/L. Granted Ottawa River water vs Perrier may not be the same, but I have a filter in my fridge and prefer to drink water instead of sugar.

That's exactly what I use it for and love it. I used to buy Perrier at Costco a lot. I only drink carbonated water, so I was going through a lot of Perrier bottles, and to be honest there is a bit of a saving BUT the clutter of empty bottles has been eliminated. In Alberta we return bottles for recycling so.....

Yeah I bought one of these ages ago for the same reason. I was drinking San Pelegrino like i was bathing in it. Ended up having to buy the huge garbage can sized recycling containers to recycle the bottles.
That being said it still doesn't taste as good as San Pelegrino, but it's much better than vile still water haha.

How come nobody suggested this added benefit (int eh cost calculation) ... the ability to recharge the CO2 back into the flat soda. Now that's recycling I can get behind.
For those that have this brand ... can the cartridges be refilled by 3rd parties? Am I tied with using their gas cartridges?

I looked into this awhile ago; still don't know a ton about the subject but from what I understand is you need to buy the CO2 in their specially sized packages as they will only fit in this machine. Also the best carbonation happens when you are able to "shake" or turn the bottle upside down to distribute the carbonation as you carbonate it. These machines don't make it easy to do that.
I learned a lot from this website (http://www.fizzgiz.com/) which produces an almost DIY-type carbonator for ~$30. His device uses readily-available CO2 cartridges which are the same ones used for BB guns, paintball guns, etc.
I think that is the true savings if you're drinking carbonated water.

I have one and love it. 4 of my friends who have come over for dinner have all individually bought one for themselves. I don't buy the syrup either. I think it's vile
. I buy frozen juice, let it thaw in the fridge, and pour a bit in a glass when making a drink. Fizzy Lemonade/grape/peach/berry/orange/etc Delicious!!
.
I get the refill cylinders at Bed Bath & Beyond. Sign up for their newsletter and they will send you a 20% off one item coupon every month. Refills are $16 that way ($20 - $4).
They don't want you doing it, but there are ways to adapt their cylinders to refill them yourself. A quick Google search should help. You can buy an adapter on-line, a used/new 5lb CO2 cylinder from ebay, and fill it at various local stores that deal with CO2.
Is it cheaper then buying pop? I would say with refill costs and juice purchases, you're not saving a ton, but as others have already mentioned, you're not throwing away a ton of cans/bottles. You're not hauling bottles/cans from the grocery store, *AND* you know exactly what it is you're drinking. No additives (other then what you get in the juice of course) and chemicals added!
HTH anyone interested! (Oh, and I forgot to mention how much fun it is to make soda on the spot for dinner guests! People love it
)
