Hedges for privacy

We were luck enough to buy a house that has a big backyard in a new sub-division. One downfall is we have 10 houses backing onto our property. We do have a fence around the yard, and I have planted new trees, but I am looking for some additional privacy. To give you more of an idea of my privacy insecurities, if I stand on my deck to jump in my pool, every house has a clear view of my me and my family. Paranoia aside, what type of hedges etc, that are fast growing, low maintenance, and descent looking, can I purchase? Price is always an issue, but I am willing to spend 1k on this "privacy shield".

Laural worked really well for us. Grew like crazy, tall and bushy. That was in Victoria so YMMV.
