Help! do I make a claim for scratches if Collision/Damage covered by VISA golden card
Hi all,
Your help is appreciated!
I rented a standard size car. I used my visa gold card which covers collision and loss damage insurance.
I made some minor linear scratches on the bumpers when I park. I called the Assured Asistance Inc. and they made a claim. Now I think I made a stupid move: I don't want to damage my insurance rating for such minor damage. There was no accident/collision just some 5 cm scratches. Now they ask me to fax all the rental record.
I am a new driver. Do you think it is a good idea to cancel the claim? Do you think it was a bad idea to make a claim in the first place when your damage is covered bumper to bumper by Visa card.
I called the Visa gold card and they confirmed that the collision and damage are covered bumper to bumper.
Again any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Of course you use your visa gold card, a claim made thru your visa gold card will not affect you insurance rating at all , plus it is free and with my gold card, i have a 0 deductible so i think yours should be the same.

Something is missing. Did the car rental company indicate that you needed to pay for any damage? Sometimes they will take a cash settlement for minor damage and just note it on the rental agreement for the next customer. I have rented many cars with scratches on them, particularity the bumpers and trunk areas.
Yes, you jumped the gun if you called your insurance company. They now have a record of an incident involving you, regardless if you make a claim or not.
Visa will pay of there was a collision and then you need to take the deductible in account. The damage may be less than the deductible, then you pay. Did you take any insurance at all when you rented?

I believe yatiger rented a car but doesn't have an insurance company yet. He's just using his credit card insurance plan.He doesn't own a car yet.
This is from what he pm'd me about.

wtf
just return the car with the scratches and say that it was there when u rented. then argue and negotiate and settle on a price.
then you claim with TD Visa.

additional info
Hi guys,
Thanks for all your input.
The story is getting more interesting.
I don't own a car. I declined insurance by the rental company. My RBC VISA card covers collision and damage. I called the RBC VISA. They confirmed that a claim doesn't leave any record in autoPlus, ie a claim has no impact on auto insurance rate in the future. They also said sth like RBC VISA is separated from insurance.
anyway more interesting is that the rental company marked no new damage on my return of the car. They don't care about a scratch as small as this. It may be there on rental.
I called the VISA to drop the claim.
Afterall, I was still wondering what is the difference btw paying the rental company for damage insurance vs using your credit card alone. I thought that the latter has a record but apparently I was told not. Is it safer to pay for rental company.
your thoughts pls.

I'm not positive if it'll be on your record but I dont see why it wont. But regardless unless you lie when you get insurance (ie insurance fraud) and say you havent made a claim in the last 7yrs or whatever, it will/may impact your insurance rates when/if you do get your own insurance in the future.

They always ask if you made a claim in the last "x" years. So unless you lie like gilboman said. Which is illegal.

If we think logically, if you hit someone with a rental car, no matter where you bought your insurance, your insurance company will hear about it (thru police or rental company or somewhere). Or else, there is a major loophole there.
Hence, buying insurance from Company A or B makes no difference, except for the price. Its like buying travel insurance with your ticket or you already have it with your work company (or VISA).
