HELP!!! Emachine PC DIED!! urgent help!! black screen

HELP!!! Emachine PC DIED!! urgent help!! black screen

i turn on my pc but it won't boot. it has a flashing dash on a black screen.. it cannot boot my xp cd.. and theres no floppy drive..

my only option is an externall hdd. i have a usb hdd. but can i install windows on it and connect it to my other pc? would xp professional support external HDD? it is a AIGO Usb 40gb HDD

what are my options?

can i boot from a compact flash reader as well?

If the system post's can you get to safe mode (f8 or F5)? If not try and reset the motherboard, you may need to look at the documentation if not have a look on the motherboard and see if there are any jumpers. You will need to short it to clear the cmos. If you cant find it then just pull the MB battery. Make sure the power is off, unplugged and ground yourself before touching the system board.

i cannot press f8 or f5 or anything.. it would just beep

just assume the mobo is fried then. your options are

1. RMA
2. get a new mobo

what you can try is clean the dust out, a more through approach is to take the parts out and blow/vacuum it.

Maybe a part could be bad? The power supply? The ram?
How was it acting before it died? Slowdowns? Crashes?

no shutdown or crashes.. just powered up and it was like this..

Dust can cause stuff to over heat, and maybe potentially collect static I think.
Whats the specs of the system?
Age?
I once cleaned my friends PSU it was loaded with dust, it died a week later. :lol: My theory, the dust was holding it together.

I had the same problem. It was the motherboard. A quick trip to CanadaComputer and $100 later, it was working.
