So just yesterday I was using my vacuum to clean out my car, and suddenly the motor sounds like it's ready to blast off to the moon.
Clues:
- This did not happen gradually...it happened all at once
- There was no strange object entering the vacuum, nor was there any sort of loud clank or anything indicating sudden physical damage
- It is not an airway issue....it's definitely part of the motor or something attached to the motor.
Any ideas, Dr. Watsons?
Thanks!

What model of vacuum?
Perhaps the air flow is being impeded, mostlikely that which cools the motor.. I wouldn't run it too long until it is resolved, you would likely burn out the motor.
Strip it down and give it a good cleaning, likely you will find the debris causing the trouble.. if not, we can come up with other ideas. :D_______________

try removing the hose, turning on the vacuum, and feeling around inside the canister. maybe somethings lodged inside.

It's a Bissell upright...not sure of the model number. I'm certain it's not airflow related, as I've taken the hose off right back to the housing, and it didn't change a thing. Also, I just happened to have run it for 30 minutes straight....guests coming over....and it worked great. Just loud._______________

I have a .. Sears? upright and this occurred to me once.
It's not the suction from the hose, but it was the suction of the air going into the motor that became blocked and it went REALLY loud.
Fortunately, on my vaccuum the intake to the motor is inside where the bag is (it just has another filter over that intake), there was some kind of piece of plastic film that covered the intake and taking that out resolved the issue.
Just an idea. :confused:_______________

How old is your vacuum? I had similiar thing happened with a hand-held years ago. Didn't quite bother to figure out why as we just retired it afterwards. After talking to people, some told us that the part of the motor might have been worn out and caused some imbalance. Hence the noise. The suction was affected in our case too

If it is not an airflow issue or too much dust in the pickup, then maybe it is a motor / fan issue - a bearing noise. Is it old enough for bearings to go. A bearing problem would be loud and kind of screeching. It will still work and will be noisy, but at some point things will stop turning - then it gets really quiet...and you have airflow problems, too.
