Hi everyone! Here's the deal. I'm planning to buy an '86 Cabby. However, I'm only 20 so insurance would be crazy if I was the primary driver. Our family already has 2 cars so the Cabby would be the 3rd. My mom (who has the cheapest insurance) is the owner of both vehicles (officially) and is the primary driver of one car ('02 Altima) and my dad is the primary on the other ('97 Civic). Currently I'm an occasional driver on both. What kind of insurance can I get thats the cheapest for the Cabby? Preferably, if my mom is the primary on that car also, and I'm occational, it would be a lot cheaper of me but then we'd be paying extra for my mom even though she won't be driving it at all. I plan to have my name taken off the Altima too. Also, can she be the primary driver on more than one car? PLEASE HELP ME! I need any suggestions and if you or your family does it a certain way, please tell me! I really want this car cuz I've fallen in love with VW's and I don't want stupid insurance to be my only hindrance! Help!

Apr 25th, 2003 10:36 PM #3Since it's an 86, you might want to get PLPD only (ie no collision, theft, etc.) Fixing VWs can be expensive, so save some cash on one thing, spend it on another...Hi everyone! You can't be the primary driver on more than 1 car with *1* insurance company. You would have to insure the second car with a second insurance company. If you have 2 cars with 1 company, you usually get a discount and the second car is listed as "pleasure" or similar while the primary is listed as "commute to work". Or at least, that's the way Meloche Monnex does things.

it is illegal and pretty much impossible nowadays to have 3 cars and only 2 people be primary. Sorry man, I tried it in my family, that didn't work, my bro had to become a primary driver.

Just a quick question, if my buddy decided to take the car that is insured under my name, and he gets into a minor collission, what would happen? Would you get in trouble with the cops, insurance policy cancelled ?

I'm also curious as to what shawn99 asked. What happens if I loaned my car to someone who does not live in the same house and they had a fenderbender?

Depends on your insurer. For mine they allow me to lend the car to someone who is 25 years of age or older. However from what I've heard if you do happen to go against the contract and lend it to someone under 25 and the car gets into an accident, the insurer will still cover it, but they will cancel your policy or will not allow you to renew with them after the policy expires. Good luck trying to find someone to insure you afterwords at a good price.
