I heard that you have to live in HK for at least 7 years before you can get this $6000, even if you have an ID card. So if you have an ID card, but never lived in HK for a period of at least 7 years, and reside mostly in another country then you won't qualify for this.
Can anyone confirm this?

You wil l need the new ID card that has been issued post 23 Jun 2003. Therefore, if you have not been in HK recently, you will need to go there to renew your card provided you have right of abode (*** in your old ID card).

wait... the HSBC fee of $200 is in Canadian dollars? Seems like a cash grab since we're only getting about $750 CDN...
Also seems like we can get an extra $200HKD if we elect to take the money after April 2012 so if you have a vacation planned next year, might be worth the wait so you don't get dinged by HSBC

Before you all go and apply for one, make sure you qualify for a permanent ID card. There are two kinds as outlined from:
http://www.sm128c.com/hk/
Hong Kong Identity Card
There are two types of identity cards, the "permanent identity card" issued to residents holding the ROA, and a regular identity card that is issued to those who don't have ROA. Anyone residing in Hong Kong for more than 180 days is required by law to register for an identity card.
Those that have right to land will be issued a non-permanent identity card. Though in essence, a RTL ID card is permanent.
The HKID card has "codes", depending on your residency status. For example, A is right of abode, R is right to land.
It looks like people with just a HKID card with the Right to Land will not qualify for this $6000.

I had a valid HK ID card with chip and lost it
Is there anyway to get this replaced without going back to HK? Either via mail or the embassy here? The website is not very clear about it. Any personal experiences with this is especially appreciated. Thanks!
