Makes sense to me. I had my account opened since Jan and the money didn't get deposited until mid March or so. I only got charged one month's worth of service charges because I didn't have the right balance for the whole month. I assume they only start charging the service fee as soon as there's any amount of $ (under the 5K or whatever it is) in the account.

Litebridte, so you registered the online account in Jan, clicked the 6000 icon, followed the steps and got the money in March right ?? That is all you did ??
Thx._______________

Hey there, no I didn't do online banking. I had opened my account in Vancouver in December and I wouldnt be able to go back a month later to get my online password so I just chose to do everything by mailed statements.
After my BoC HK account was opened and I got a statement in the mail in early Feb, then I was able to apply for the 6K with the HK gov't using my account number. So as you can see, it took a few months since I did everything by mail.
After more than 6 months I finally got the money to my BoC Canada account (went to Toronto in May to open that up).
Only ended up paying one month's worth of service charge for insufficient balance.

If I'm going the HSBC route, I'm just wondering if you need to open a local HSBC Canada account (i.e. become a HSBC client first) in order to open a HSBC HK account OR can you just open a standalone HSBC HK account in Canada? I went to a local HSBC Canada branch and they told me that I have to open an account with HSBC Canada first before I can open a HK account. I want to know if they are telling the truth since Bank of China does not have this requirement.

For boc(hk), I thought you needed to open a boc(Canada) account to do the remittance? The bank explained to me that the boc Canada and hk are like "brothers and sisters", so you would not need to be at hong kong physically to do the remittance, because of the "witness" remittance

I read all 39 pages almost everyone do it with the BoC route. No BoC in Mtl so I do it with HSBC.
Got the phone call today that my account package is ready for me to pick up.
Question: Do I have to sign-in online HSBC to apply?

So I went with the BOC route and received the letter in the mail today. Now patiently awaiting for their phone call for the password...
For those who chose online banking, it's possible to do a remittance online to a Canadian bank account? I really don't want to open a BOC Canada account... I wouldn't mind the fees that I may incur for the wire.

How long is the wait approximately from registering the $6000 online to seeing it in the HK account?

I picked up my BOCHK password on Friday. The lady told me to try to log in a week later. I had a brain fart Friday night and tried to log on (it gave me an error saying password rejected or something along that line). Did I screwed things up by attempting to log on too soon?
