Fyi, with Scott's they actually advise turning the mulch half way through the season to have the color last. Not exactly what you expect by how it is advertised but that's what customer service said to me when I called them.

They look great out of the bag. After using the black one early spring last year, the colour was gone by mid summer. I don't recommend these if you're OCD on the mulch colour.

Thanks for the tip. I don't recall seeing coloured mulch at Walmart, I'll have to have a look next time I'm there.

Do people just add this to existing mulch on top? What about the old ones? Any good place to throw dirt out if too high?

I always lose enough year-over-year due to leaf clean-up in the fall/spring that I can just dump on top. But then I never have a super deep layer of mulch every year either (maybe 2" or so?).

In terms of getting rid of old soil, it depends how much you have. If it's not a huge amount, you can usually sneak it into your regular garbage. If it's a LOT, there are companies that will remove it for you for a cost... I think in Halton region, under a wheelbarrow's worth costs $5 to drop yourself at the dump, or $10 if you have more than a wheelbarrow full (basically up to the size of the back of a pickup truck full).

I had a lot of dirt to get rid of after a huge backyard reno - I just posted a Kijiji ad for "free dirt/fill" a bunch of people came and picked it up right from my backyard.

Scotts lasts me a full year. Then I have to refill it half way through the 2nd year due to colour fading. Now I need to replace them completely. Good price for $3.99 for now so I can get just the job done earlier this year. Too bad they are the only one has the red I like.

I've never had mulch before, but it sounds like it's a bit of a money sink with how often you guys talk about replacing it.

Depends on the size of your garden. I spend about 60 bucks a year.

The Sobeys down the street clears out all their gardening stuff in July. Red mulch usually goes for $.99 per bag. THATS HOT if you can wait. :)
