Curious do you guys install the rack on a masonry wall? or do you install them on studs? I'm trying to decide where they should be installed, since 4x tires are pretty heavy.

Most people install on studs. If you want to be extra secure, u can mount 2 long 2x4s across 4-5 studs and then mount the rack on the horizontal 2x4s

I think the extra space is to accommodate extra wide tires. I can fit 5x 225mm tires on it with a couple inches of space left.

Since the unit is 48". Then it can accommodate 4x 300mm tires.

Yeah it takes a bit of strength to get it up there. Maybe I'll design a pulley system when I'm older.
So I'm outta luck with the 305 width racing slicks on my Corolla...

technically 12" = 304.8mm, so you could probably fit those 305 tires with a bit of squeeze....

yes i know you were being sarcastic....
