robfun wrote: ↑Here are the notes I've gathered on overseeding.
Overseeding is a method of thickening up a lawn that has become thin or damaged by insects, diseases, weeds, drought, excessive traffic or other types of damage. To ensure success, add compost, peat or topsoil before overseeding.
The best time to overseed a lawn is in the fall (mid-August to mid-September). Keep the overseeded area moist by watering several times a day. One week after seeding, reduce watering to twice a day until seedlings are established.
Recommended:
- kentucky bluegrass (best in fall)
- Drought-resistant grass mixes
- Perennial rye grass (best in spring). See: https://landscapeontario.com/how-to-mai ... althy-lawn
- Red fescue (sunny areas).
- Fine fescue (shady areas)
Avoid:
- Tall fescue -- will stand out as being tall, crabgrass-like.
Grass sees are killed/destroyed by freeze/thaw actions.
Grass seeds need consistent soil temperatures above 10 degrees C to germinate.
Fall (September):
- Fewer weed seeds germinate during this time.
- Sunny areas: Use a blend of about 60% Kentucky Blue, 20% Perennial Rye and 20% Red Fescue seed.
- Shady areas use a blend of 20% Kentucky Blue, 20% Perennial Rye and 60% Fine Fescues. Be aware that chinch bugs prefer fescue grass.
- Use a blend of species that includes Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fescues only in the fall. Kentucky bluegrass takes up to 30 days to germinate so it needs the cool weather and precipitation in the fall.
Spring (mid-April to early June):
- Use a seed mixture with a high concentration of Perennial Ryegrass as it germinates quickly (within 3-5 days) and will help shade the soil to reduce soil surface temperatures and block out weeds, which are also germinating at this time.
- Certain Ryegrasses contain endophytes. Endophytes are fungi that grow in the plant without causing harm to the turfgrass, but make the grass resistant to above-ground feeding insects, including sod webworm, bill bugs and chinch bugs.

Brands:
Warning: 2018 reviews for the Scott's costco brand say they've changed the seed mix. I haven't called to confirm.
- Scott's Grass Seed Supreme (costco): 4kg (7800 sq feet) for $22 ($17 on sale). For Sunny and Shady Areas, 12% Abbey Kentucky Bluegrass, 27% Charger II Perennial Ryegrass, 19% Gulf Annual Ryegrass, 42% Boreal Creeping Red Fescue

My only problem is under my one big tree with is shady aera, based on @robfun https://forums.redflagdeals.com/home-de ... #p29374549 I have to get fine fescue, will it make any difference the soil type i was getting a truck of gardening soil which contains:chillychin wrote: ↑ If you overseed in early September, the grass should have enough time before the frost comes to establish itself (usually Nov ish the frost)
So you planted in May and then the next year they were gone?
Maybe they didnt survive the summer? Grass and weeds are living things. They grow and die and require maintenance. Grass is not a "ok I planted, it will live forever!" And weeds especially are not "ok I sprayed it once, I will never have a weed again!"
Grass can die for a large number of reasons
-No water and high heat, they turn a grey color then brown and they are dead (most obvious)
-Snow mold - Which can happen if you leave your grass long and it snows. The snow will make your grass matted and flatten it, therefore not letting it "breath". Before winter always best to cut it shorter (around 2 inches) and make sure its clean and raked.
-Grubs
-Animals peeing on it (like a large number of times)
-Gets crowded out by weeds
-Gets crowded out and shaded by other grass
Personally, I live in a town house and hence I keep my grass "maintained". But once I get a fully detached, I plan on splurging and just interlocking as much as I can!

I found the same thing with the creeping charlie in my back yard. You may have to spray again in 2-3 weeks, or if you have the patience put it in a pump sprayer (or a windex type spray bottle) with some water and dish soap and spray each cup individually. Mix it a little stronger then instructions (about 1/4 water). Takes time to apply, but they'll die for sure.

I haven't had experience with grass under a tree but there's a bunch of problems that I heard.Rlcky wrote: ↑ My only problem is under my one big tree with is shady aera, based on @robfun https://forums.redflagdeals.com/home-de ... #p29374549 I have to get fine fescue, will it make any difference the soil type i was getting a truck of gardening soil which contains:

Mainly since it's under a tree and depending on the size, it gives constant shade, so it's tough for grass to grow. On top of that it's roots will obviously be sucking water in faster then any other plants near it.
Just a theory, but again if you want to plant in the fall, perhaps it's leaves won't be as "full" and sunlight can creep in more easily.
But trees are a toughie since it will be the "dominant" one.
So I'm not sure if better soil will give the grass a better chance, but it definitely doesn't hurt

Anyone have any recommendations if I were to make a trip down to the States, where and which brand to buy for weed-killers (not Roundup, that kills everything). Would Orth Weed B Gon (crabgrass control) be a good one to buy?

On the topic, now is the prime time to treat for grubs as they will be entering the phase where they mate and lay eggs and start the vicious cycle of grub damage (if they are prominent in your area)

I'm going to bite and get the PAR 3 from the Canadian ebay seller, and request a Twix chocolate bar.
Does this kill the big weeds with established stems ? They are easy to pull out but I am lazy. I assume they will kill the smaller 'cats ear' weeds, like pictured below?

The ebay seller is now selling at $115 but if you use the P15HOME code the total comes out to $95.53.

Crap, I got an Aero also but reading all these responses, I shoulda thrown mine out. I ate it.thelefteyeguy wrote: ↑ the guy that ship my PAR3 had a aero chocolate bar inside...it was a little weird...(i threw it out lol).
Maybe it was super infused with Par 3 and I can now just walk around and pee on weeds.
FWIW: I ate mine last week. I am still alive... for now anyways. YMMV.

They ban it for "personal" use, but golf courses spray the shit everywhere and probably 100x more quantity wise.

Sprayed my lawn last week Monday and by Weds all the ones I've sprayed have gone brown, what's left today were just black/rotting leaves.
I'm on well water, so I feel a little better spraying eco-friendly products.
As many have said, best defense is keeping the lawn thick/mow tall because it prevents the seeds from the weeds germinating. I hope in a few years I will only need to physically pluck out a few weeds a week instead of thousands in my thin/bare lawn.
