Yes they are much better than the dollar store lights.

That said, its not about having the brightest light, its about having one that you use .... which generally favours ones a bit smaller, AA batteries that you will always have, etc.

I bought the Dorcy one years ago.. it's solid and the batteries are still not empty... it does sleep in my car most of the time. The newer ones are far brighter. I bought an 8W from Princess Auto for $20 and it's very bright.

Agree with Ji2 about Cree type flashlights (Sipik brand in particular) ..wellmade, about $7 bright and runs on 1 AA. got a few from dx.com ,focalpoint.com and meritline.
Since having these, I will not buy any of these fl running of 3 AAAs.

Ditto, couldn't have said this any better. I always have AA batteries lying around, but can't say the same about AAA cells.

I also bought the tomtop ones.
I bought a Duracell and other types from Home Depot, Canadian Tire, etc.

The tomtop ones are so much better it's not even close.

I will never buy from a store here again. The difference is that big.
