Hi All,

This would be the first time doing this for the car. Just thought if this price sounds fair.

$580CA + tax for
Belt
Water pump
coolant
cam seal

Much appreciated

+1, when you go at the dealer, they charge dealer $ for labour.

the above posters sarcasm aside, you can really get that job done for 400 taxes in.

I honestly haven't done a timing belt change for the past 10 years, what I meant was that if you got the price at the dealer, then you might find cheaper elsewhere, I have no idea how much it is worth anymore for your car... I only know how much the dealer charges for my car... it is unfortunately coming up soon. (and with the price they are charging, one thing for sure I am not going there.)

Thank you. But 13 hours was a long time to wait, and you didn't leave your cousin's name.

thanks

Hi all and thanks for the feedback.

I'll look around for any reputable mechanics who will do it for $400.
Yes, dealers will get the job done, but it always worries me how they tend to pull numbers out of the air.

Sincerely,

Dealers always charge as per a pre-set time list. If "Company X" say that it takes on average 4 hours to change a TB, then, it will be 4 hrs for every dealer in Canada.

BTW, You always get what you pay for...

That's just it - you won't find anyone reputable to do the work for $400. Just "friends of friends" who will offer to do the work in their driveway, or yours.

I did mine around 500$tax in in a private garage.

580+tx at Dealer sounds fair.

All shops, not just dealers, use the flat rate book (or almost all, and those that don't have the book for reference). I would never take my car to a shop that charges only time and material. I would hate to help pay for a trainee or unqualified mechanic (and there are lots of unlicenced mechanics working in shops) to do a job in 3 hours where a qualified tech takes 1. Time and materials is a poor way to pay for mechanical work.

Do you have to change cam seal and crank seal?
Is it recommended to change these during this tune-up?

Thanks,
Lexi

I just got off the phone with my lic. HOnda Tech who told me that till today, he has never seen the cam seal nor crank seal needing to be replaced on a civic. If this was a 91, 92, 94, 96 or 97 Accord, then yes!! I personally own a 2001 civic sedan and have never changed mine. In any event, he told me that you must have gotten the quote from the stealership as they love to upsell the seals when not required. For the rest of the work using all original honda parts, you're looking at approx $375-$400 (incl. labour of course)..
