Hey guys, This is my first post here, although I've been vising the forums for a long time now.
Anyways, the reason I am making this thread is because I need your help on deciding what laptop to get for university. I ordered a laptop from Lenovo, it was the Ideapad Y480 and it seemed amazing. However, after three weeks, it has still not arrived and everytime I called Lenovo all I received was BS and that "it would arrive in one more day". I decided that when I finally get the laptop, I am going to send it back and get a full refund, as there is a 30 day return policy.
I was looking to spend a maximum of 1100 with taxes and shipping, seeing as that is what the Lenovo cost me :P
Also, I was looking for a computer with the same, or better specs as the Lenovo, which were:
Ivy Bridge i7 processor
8GB DDR3 ram
1TB 5200rpm Hard drive
14" screen
Backlit Keyboard
Blu-Ray Drive (not mandatory, but I would like at least an optical drive)
Here are the specs from the website: 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor( 2.30GHz 6MB)
Operating system
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT640M-LE 2GB
Memory
8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
Display
14.0" HD Glare with integrated camera 1366x768
Pointing device
Industry Standard Touchpad
Hard Drive
1TB 5400 rpm
Optical Drive
Blu-ray/DVD-RW
Battery
6 Cell Lithium-Ion
Network Card
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200BGN
Bluetooth
Bluetooth Version 4.0
Warranty
One year
Form Factor
Notebook
and here is the link to the laptop: http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/product...480/index.html EARN CASH BACK
I am planning on using the laptop for schoolwork, Photoshop, editing videos and maybe some gaming. I am also considering one of the newer macbooks seeing as they always have deals for student in August.
Thanks!!!

The Sony S-Series 13 inch is a pretty good replacement
http://store.sony.ca/webapp/wcs/stor...er=S_Laptops_S EARN CASH BACK
It can be specced the similarly as the notebook you're replacing and the screen, case, build quality and size are all much better.
If size is not as big an issue the Dell XPS 15R SE is a pretty good deal and it comes with a Radeon 7730M which is a little better than the 640LE (Fermi) in the Lenovo.

How is it horrible experience with a laptop you haven't even touched?
More like horrible experience with Lenovo shipping.
Such a misleading title....

Something ASUS from Canada Computers or NCIX ... You get better warranty and better build quality than Lenovo, HP, Dell etc.

Occasionally Lenovo shipping can be quite frustrating. I had a terrible time getting my T420 after boxing day. However, I just ordered a T430 for my mother and it arrived in 8 days. I would say return your machine. You should stick with the Lenovo. They are the only good PC laptop manufacturer. By the way, there is a $100 restocking fee.

honestly lenovo is pretty bad with their support staff (for the non thinkpad line at least) . They still haven't updated my laptop's warranty after requesting many times. Like what is this? Seriously? They keep saying they will do it Asap. But it's still not done. Period.
Honestly. It's crazy. Makes me want to avoid them.

You have no idea what you're talking about dude. Lenovo has been rated mid-range below Asus and Apple for many years, and JUST BARELY above HP, Dell and MSI. They are much better than Acer and Gateway USED to be, but are on par for quality. Also, everyones warranty SUCKS compared to Asus' which is a $300 value, included for free.
I had several ASUS products still registered to my name. I simply emailed Tech Support, explained I'd sold all of them (2 laptops, a video card and a motherboard) and asked them to remove those items, while replacing it with my used laptop. They requested a copy of the receipt (of the used laptop), which I sent, and a week later, all was done - 4 products removed, a USED product added (with their Accidental Damage) and they didn't ask me to pay for anything!Last edited by _Allan_; Jun 25th, 2012 at 09:59 AM.

Do you not have a tracking number where you can find out the progress of the shipment?
I believe the PCs ship from China so it could be held up in customs.
If you return it you will pay a restocking fee. I thought it was 15% but I could be wrong.

It took me about a week to get my T530. The only problem is they put the wrong screen in my laptop
I was supposed to get a 1920x1080 screen but they put a 1366x768 which is garbage.
Still dealing with them on this issue. They want a tech to remote into my machine before they give me labels to ship it back._______________

If there is a tracking number then I imagine the 30-day return warranty would only start from the delivery date.

Lenovo is a pretty crappy manufacture/vendor.
The Thinkpads are their only redeeming product but they are overpriced for what they bring to the table. An equivalent Latitude is cheaper and usually has better materials and build.
I used to love thinkpads, but the BS they're pulling with the T420 and the T420s and killing off the p designation is really pissing me off.
The ideapads are in the same league as the vostros. Unless it was a superdeal I'd grab and off the shelf Asus.
I really wish Asus would put in pointer sticks._______________
