Here's a British reviewer discussing the tablet in good lighting boosting the rather good value behind it:

Here he is again, streaming Steam on to the tablet with much smoother results compared to another Chinese tablet:

Here he is once more with a high res close up of the tablet from an off angle using a 4K video recorder:

Here's the dual boot version below reviewed by a Russian reviewer. He is using a poor quality screen cover and video camera which reduces visibility somewhat:

The same reviewer tests the tablet's HDMI out on his TV as an HTPC:

He also tries simply outputting the screen to TV via HDMI in various W8.1 apps (to what appears to be silky smooth results):

A different Russian video showcasing Chuwi Vi8 on WiDi / Miracast:

A high production value review from a Russian tech group, they review the very similar non-HDMI Single OS version:

According to AliExpress the vendor has a 95.3% satisfaction rate on this product sale alone, which is reasonably good all considered. FAQs & Tips

What is the one thing I should buy with this tablet?

Pick up the Chuwi screen protector, I would strongly recommend it as the screen is not high grade Gorilla Glass 3 or Sapphire. It's not worth the risk.

Glass, I'm still seeing some Chinese text here and there, especially in the W8.1 login field.

Try this:

My system time keeps changing in Windows 8.1 and Android.

Aviador has come across the solution. He is a little obtuse about the registry key but for the Chuwi Vi8 create a DWORD key.

The microHDMI cable isn't sitting properly in the port, see below.

I'm noticing that the HDMI out picture on my TV is sensitive to my tablet's orientation.
JustBob wrote: When I connect the tablet (in Windows) to my tv, it has to be in portrait mode otherwise the display on the tv is messed up. That's counter intuitive since you'd figure landscape mode is the same shape/format as your tv screen. Not that big a deal except that I don't really like having cables sticking out of the top of the tablet (it's on a stand) since it puts more stress on the ports. So what I do is lock the tablet screen in portrait mode and then put it on the side on the stand.
I updated W8.1 and the screen rotation is now offset and glitching. How do I fix it?

The screen orientation problem people have brought up is due to the Bosch Corporation Accelerometer update that's offered as optional driver software from the W8.1 update list. Rollback the driver update in the Control Panel hardware list and that should fix it.
glassandmonocle wrote: I'm glad you bring this up because I had the exact same issue. You may have unknowingly selected the optional update for the Bosch Corp Accelerometer.

Go to your device manager, it will look something like this:
Image

Click the Sensors menu heading
Right Click BMA2x2, Click Properties
Click the Driver tab
Click the Roll Back Driver button

That should fix it immediately after reboot.

Google and a little common sense go a long way.

Does the Chuwi Vi8 use Windows 8.1 RT?

No, absolutely not. MS has abandoned RT, Chuwi uses the full version W8.1, it is the same OS that's loaded onto the majority of new desktops around the world. If you read on in this FAQ, you'll also learn that you can turn this tablet into a full desktop replacement with ease.

Does the Chuwi Vi8 offer GPS?

No, only as an add-on product.

What about 3G?

Nope.

What is the maximum microSD storage it can register?

Published advertisements suggests 64gb. Others speculate it could be as high as 128gb, given the lack of widespread use of the latter.

What makes this tablet different from other 8" IPS Windows 8.1 tablets?

The big selling point seems to be:
(1) Dual Boot: W8.1 & Android 4.4.x
(2) The Price
(3) The Hardware Feature Set
(4) The Positive Reviews

Some people are simply on the fence about W8.1 and don't want to abandon Android. This gives them the best of both worlds.

Who shouldn't buy this tablet?

It's tough to speak to others' preferences, but there are a few groups I would suggest look elsewhere:
(1) Tech-illiterate family and friends
(2) Those looking for a different tablet size
(3) Those looking for maximum convenience regardless of cost
(4) Extreme Power Users (e.g. top-shelf tablet gamers)

Tell me something interesting about the tablet I might not know.

Ok. It can do the following:
(1) Stream Games from other devices
(2) Play Games natively from the device, streaming to a TV, while using a bluetooth controller
(3) It can function as a full 8.1 desktop: Attach HDMI Monitor & OTG dongle for keyboard, mouse... even printers/scanners.
(4) It can WiDi stream 1080p content to a TV wireless, or through it's HDMI out
(5) It can serve as a full dedicated HTPC device streaming 1080p60fps to a TV
(6) You can DJ using this device and an app through 8.1 (better) or Android (still doable).
(7) It will support W10 in one form or another, even if that supports comes through 3rd implementations.
(8) It has good accessory support: Screen Covers, Standard Cases, and Bluetooth keyboard cases, etc.
(9) You can slap a Chewbacca sticker by the logo on the back and show it to your friends.

Any tips for a regular chap like myself on the fence?

Are you on the fence because of price and are you reasonably tech savvy? If so, you might find this device both interesting as a fascination and useful as an implement.

Are you looking for hardware and platform flexibility? The Dual OS platform provides the latter, and the hardware amenities (WiDi Support, MicroSD, microHDMI, and microUSB) provide the former. Things like the faster RAM and faster than average eMMC storage are nice bonuses that might reflect the tablets zippy performance.

Are you looking for something both useful and survivable if lost, damaged, or stolen? You'll grow to like this tablet, but learn to live without it given how little you paid for it. Tablets should not be a capital purchase decision. They're fun little useful devices.

Any other screen-related or power saving tips while we're at it?

Modified from tutorial here:
http://www.gadgetreactor.com/2015/02/fi ... andby.html

1. Download ConnectedStandbyAutomation.zip at http://1drv.ms/179rdI1

2. Extract to folder of same name on Desktop

3. Right click on the first .ps1 file and 'Edit'

4. Powershell ISH will pop open, change the second line from "Get-NetAdapter 'wi-fi'" to "Get-NetAdapter 'Wi-Fi'" and save

5. Repeat on second .ps1 file

6. Swipe your charms bar open and search for 'cmd', long press to right click and pick 'Run as Administrator'

7. Type 'powershell' (no quotes) hit enter, then type 'Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted' (noquotes) and hit enter.

8. Copy your 'ConnectedStandbyAutomation' folder from the desktop to your Program Files

9. Swipe your charms bar and search for 'tasks', pick 'Schedule Tasks'

10. From the 'Action' menu at the top, 'Import Tasks'. Navigate to your ConnectedStandbyAutomation folder in Program Files and pick the first .xml file.

11. Repeat for the second.

Viola, should be sorted now. You can test by hitting your sleep button, waiting a few seconds, then coming back.
How do I make my SD card accessible in Windows 8.1 and Android?
benge42ca wrote: Partitioning doesn't help, but cold boot does. You just need to get the card formatted in FAT32, which is what Android does with it when you ask it to format... so that's much simpler than futzing around with partitions. Unless, of course, users want to use the SD card as a disk extension, in which case they do need an NTFS partition, but that's a rather more involved process.

Hows does this device compare to the Hipstreet W8 Pro?

On the whole they're comparable, hardware-wise. Questions about the quality of the Hipstreet W8 Pro screen against the established Chuwi Vi8 set aside. The big differentiation is the dual boot feature on the Chuwi Vi8 and the custom accessories for the tablet which seem to be lacking on the Hipstreet W8 Pro. The Hipstreet W8 Pro may have a slightly better front facing camera, though.

Composite benchmark between the Chuwi Vi8 and Hipstreet W8 Pro:

The Chuwi does modestly better in the integer benchmarks, but nothing stand out impressive. The floating point performance is a little better yet, but nothing to phone home about. I suspect, if you regressed these results, they may not be meaningfully different.

The RAM memory, however, appears significantly faster.

RFDer First Looks

If you find their comments and pictures insightful, thank these folks.
dingmah wrote: So I just picked up my Chuwi Vi8, and the whole 5 minutes I've toyed with it, it feels really good.

Ordering
  • The version I ordered was the dual OS with micro HDMI, and Bluetooth keyboard case.
  • I ordered from the AliExpress vendor (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/CHUWI-VI ... 75377.html) as posted in post #1.
  • Against RFD fashion, I paid for $9 express DHL shipping and was charged ~$18 in duties & fees. I didn't want my package shipped without the ability to track it.
  • I placed my order on Friday March 27, and picked up my package today. I should have got it yesterday April 1, but I got off work too late to pick it up at the DHL depot.
Quick First Impressions
  • Android 4.4 and Windows 8.1 performance is very snappy out of the box. Both felt like I was using a Core i3/i5 tablet.
  • I haven’t installed any apps yet, so I’ll post another update later on.
  • Battery was showing 96% charged out of the box.
  • The tablet doesn’t feel cheap at all; it has a good weight to it all. The plastic backing also doesn’t feel cheaply made.
Bluetooth Keyboard Case
  • Case is very nice! It is a Chuwi branded case made specifically for the Vi8. I think the 8” Windows tablet size is common enough that it’s most likely a generic case with Chuwi branding on it. I don’t know what the material is, but it feels like a textured vinyl. The case has cut outs for the back camera and speaker.
  • The BT keyboard is a generic Chinese made keyboard that I’ve seen sold under multiple brands. The underside of the keyboard is a flat sheet metal so that it works with the magnetized case.
Overall, a recommended buy for anyone looking for a quality low priced Windows 8.1 tablet.

I tried one of 10" Onda's from Aliexpress... Reputable seller (three diamonds :) )

Looked great.
Anyway, unit came defective - was freezing after couple minutes of work.

It took me two YouTube videos to convince seller.

And it took me sending unit back to China and arguing with Aliexpress for 2 months to get my money back...

Never again I'll by product worth more than $10 from China.

Just my personal experience.

Indeed that's the warranty- which is kinda shocking that its only 6 months and not a year minimum. However what im getting at is : out of that 6 months of warranty if you need to return it to get a new one , youre look at losing 2-3 months of that warranty right off the bat , which sucks.

Even if you dont need/want the dual boot, the extra 16gb of internal storage is deff. worth another $9. Since they're both using the same chipset, i'm sure you could dual boot the OP's one too(might have to flash the bios or something) but youd be hard pressed to divide 16gb of internal storage between Windows 8.1 and android 4.4/5.0(Windows 8.1 on its own is like 12gb ones its fully unpacked and installed)

I guess that RMAs, DOAs, warranty issues, refunds are easy to deal with (as it's with most online vendors based off China). In case of a return, shipping items back to China with insurance and tracking is pretty cheap as well and it's paid by the vendor. Am I right?
glassandmonocle wrote: http://www.tinydeal.com/onda-v820w-8-wi ... 42442.html

Now I'm not one to push Chinese tablets on the masses, but I know there is a market and interest among RFDers and I believe rather than settling on a flash in the pan sale, you can look to Chinese distributors for alternatives.

To that end, the ONDA V820w.
glassandmonocle wrote: Folks that missed out, you'll thank me for not jumping the gun. The 8 and 10 inch units that'll go on sale in the coming months will blow this no name try hard brand out of the water.

These mainland Chinese manufacturer gits seem good on the face of it, but there's too many bollocky problems not worth discovering over the course of ownership.

With that said, if you feel the need, MS Store returns are an easy endeavor to engage for the Stream 7. I still think you may want to hold on to it given the case and screen protector all for $89 + tax.

My personal view is the return policy isn't too bad or a Chinese vendor. More than acceptable for this low cost purchase.
