Now, I'm just wondering, would we have a use for one of these things at home? Or are they only for the geeky auto dudes who knows how to fix things for themselves?

I'm not sure about that product.
I ordered this instead:

I was actually looking at these on DX last night - I believe the first one is for VW/Audi. So if you don't have one of those, then the second one is what you want....

Does anyone know of software I can use with this for a Nissan? (besides what's included). The review on DX says that it works for Nissan 350Z.

Unless you want to view live performance data on your car, you don't need a PC cable. For diagnostics and troubleshooting, all you need is a OBD II code reader.
I got my code reader for $12.99 on eBay 2 years ago. Was a great investment.

This software(http://www.geocities.com/obdscantech2000/)has a consult II emulator which is used by Nissan. I'm waiting for the cable to test it out.
