In regards to the taxes:
If the imported car was actually a title transfer ( family buying it for me ) would I still have to pay the PST @ the MTO? Or it's just basically GST + 6.1 % ( Non NA built ) + RIV Fees?
Thx !
Hi,
I am going to get a used car from a dealer in US..
Obviously, I need a DMV title when I cross the border. But it seems like it takes several weeks to get the title with my name on it after purchasing the car.
I am wondering people buying used car in US were actually waiting for that long to get the title..
any help will be appreciated!!
Heya,
I bought a car from a dealer, and they had the title in hand. Due to some complications I wasnt able to purchase the saturday I went down, but I called the following monday and said I was ready to buy the car I had gone to see. I wired the money, and they sent the paperwork via UPS. it took them 2 days to ship the documents, and I got it the business day after they shipped (via UPS). The dealership should have the title in hand otherwise somehting fishy is going on. What excuse are they trying to feed you? UPS delivers internationally next business day.
dont forget US customs needs the title 72 hours before you cross. call them for more information abotu what they need and make sure you have done your research on teh import procedure so you dont screw yourself.
Is there a list of new car dealers, that are willing to sell (and have experience selling) to Canadians to Export to Canada? I'm looking for dealers in NY, but willing to travel elsewhere.
Looking for Toyota or Nissian
thanks

What make of car you wanna buy?
If Subaru or Ford, you can go to www.vanbortelsubaru.com
They'll help you out for sure.
After months of research and looking, we finally got our 2008 Toyota Sienna imported from the USA (just got the plates today). In the end we decided not to go down there ourselves, but instead got a place in Scarborough called "USA Cars 2 Canada" (www.usacars2canada.com/index.html) to do all the work for us...
We were emailed many different Toyota dealerships, from people on various forums, that would deal with Canadians... but, by the time we called them (mid-March)... they had stopped. I was still able to find one place in North Carolina (thanks to vim back in February), but unfortunately, the price after a ride to the airport, flight down there, fuel, time off work, and the $1500 cash back promotion I wasn't able to make use of, it would have been almost the same price as using this place to do all the work for me (they were able to use the $1000 cash back available in the NE states).
We saved roughly $7500 by not buying the vehicle in Canada. (Upgrades we got were 16" Alloy Wheels, LE EVP#2, Daytime Running Lights & Deicer Grid, Towing Prep Package, Carpet Floor Mats/Door Sill Protector).
If we could have found a dealer in NY (or even PA)... we definitely would have gone down there and done this ourselves... as we could have saved at least $1500 more.
In the end, we were really happy choosing to import the car in the manner we did.
Thanks

I have a quick question about the new Excise tax on fuel inefficient cars. Is this only on new cars and used cars that are in use after May 2007? We are looking at buying a Nissan Armada and I just came across this newer excise tax and am worried. The Nissan Armada would be taxed $3000 which definitely adds a lot. We need a large vehicle as we have 3 children now, a big dog, and will have at least one more child (2nd and 3rd are twins, so we have a higher than average chance of twins again), and we need it to tow a travel trailer.
From the way I read the new excise tax, a used vehicle from before May 20 2007 will not be taxed, is this correct? The wording is a little unclear, as I can't really tell if it means the car in use by anyone, or if I personally have to have been using it since before May 2007. The old excise tax was for heavy vehicles, would the old tax on heavy vehicles apply to an older SUV if it is too old for the new tax to apply? Can the dealer tell me the date the car was put in use, since it could be before or after May if it is a 2007?
Also about the Nissan Warranty. I read somewhere that a used Nissan that was registered for at least 6 months in the U.S. can have the remaining warranty transfered to Canada, is that correct and who would I contact to verify?
Below is the Canada Revenue Agency's wording for the Fuel Inefficient excise tax:
Q.2 What vehicles will the new excise tax apply to?
A.2 The excise tax will apply to certain new automobiles (including station wagons, vans and sport utility vehicles) designed primarily to carry passengers. The excise tax does not apply to pick-up trucks, vans equipped to accommodate ten or more passengers, ambulances and hearses. Please refer to question 3 to find out which vehicles are subject to the excise tax.
Q.5 When will the new excise tax come into effect?
A.5 The new excise tax applies to automobiles delivered by a manufacturer after March 19, 2007 and each automobile imported into Canada after that day unless the automobile had been put into service before March 20, 2007.Q.7 Are used vehicles imported into Canada subject to this new tax?
A.7 If the vehicle was put into service prior to March 20, 2007 and imported into Canada on or after March 20, 2007, the tax does not apply.
If the vehicle was put into service on or after March 20, 2007 and imported into Canada, the tax would apply provided the weighted average fuel consumption rating of 13 or more litres per 100 km.
An automobile is considered to be put into service at the earliest of:
the date the automobile is registered with a motor vehicle authority;
the date it is plated;
the date on which the automobile's warranty has been put in place; or
the date the automobile is appropriated by a dealer for their own use.

I would agree that the "put into service" date is not quite straight forward, and leaves one to many questions, but I read it as this;
It applies to new and used vehicles, but the important date seems to be the Mar 20, 2007. An example, if you are looking at a used 07 Armada, and the original owner plated the vehicle before Mar 20, 2007, then the tax does NOT apply. If the vehicle was originally plated after that date, then the tax does apply. Of course, any one of the above four conditions you quoted for "put into service" could be used to justify the tax.
The best thing would be to phone the CRA regarding the Excise Tax Act 1-866-330-3304, and give them your example of an imported US vehicle.

I currently own a car in US (I work in US) and the car is my name, I'm wondering how insurance will work?
As soon as I export this vehicle from US, I assume my US insurance won't cover it, my question is, from this time, until the car gets plated, is it possible to get Canadian insurance coverage?
Also, can I import the car as someone else' name without that person being present at the border with me?
Thanks
