I think I'd have trouble letting go of my upper deck hockey cards.

How To Control Your Death? Is It Possible?
I was writing to the thread "24 Hours To Live. What Would You Do?" but I wrote it so "religiously" that it doesn't fit the question anymore, so here it is in its own thread:
If I had only 24 hrs to live, I'll spend a brief time (less than 1 hr) with my family only to say good-bye but not to express the love or anything likes that, then I'll meditate alone all day until I've gone.
More than half of us will soon face this question one day, I suggest you to prepare for it: Leaving this World with calmness and in control.
When you see your body in pain you know it is in pain, when you see your body grasping for air, you know it is deteriorating and will soon stop working.
You see it, know that it is suffering then you know you are different with your body: It is in pain and it is punishing you but you are not suffering, you are in control. You still can smile and leave with good thought (good thought is no thoughts).
Love (with conditions) as most of us know it, is selfish and harmful, including the love towards your family.
Only the unconditional and indistinguishable love (compassion) is good. With that love, you can and will find peace instantly in this world. Attachment (self) is not wisdomly and is the cause of suffering.
You miss and love your kids, your wifes/husbands too much and you don't want to leave (that is selfish, isn't it?), but you are dying anyway, so what the smart people will do?
Realize that attachments is wrong, selfish, harmful and suffering, that person will free himself (herself) from all of them and die in peace.
When we know we have little time to live, we tend to try to finish something, enjoy the last hours of our life and by doing that we are making the last mistakes of our life.
As soon as we know the time, be prepared to go to the hibernation mode: close all the programs, shut down the memory and let your body turn off by itself, don't miss it (your body), don't miss your loved ones.
Life is unpredictable so we better prepare for it now, instead of closing our eyes and ignoring it. Only weak people do that, we are strong (if we want to), aren't we?
I don't suggest you to prepare by praying to your Gods, devoting to God's will, spending more time thinking about God, talking to him, dreaming about the Heaven and trying to do the good things as God taught you, to get a ticket to go there (selfish again, isn't it?). That will (almost) help nothing!
Be prepared by practicing to control your minds, your thoughts, your reactions, your egos and to learn to see the World and people around you differently. Treat the terrorists the same as you treat your wifes/husbands and your kids, may I suggest?
Actually, when you are trying to do good deeds as God taught you in hope for a place in His Heaven, you are transforming yourself to be a better person and that is you are saving yourself (from what? Hell?), not God doing it.
Gods were and are sometime wrong, some Gods are better than others, as we know it everyday through the news, so perhaps no Gods is better...
Attachment is suffering:
Attached to (my) things: - Who is more suffering: A 10 year old (rich) kid or an adult who's just lost his/her $10,000?
Attached to (my) people: - Who is happier: Mother Theresa or a King with ten wives? Without the "self" word attached, people will be no more suffering.
Attached to (my) thoughts: - My idea is better than yours, I'm right, you are wrong, I'm good, you are bad, You did bad things to me, to my people,... All of those are causing problems for you. Knowing things as it happens, know it right or wrong, but don't attach yourself to the thoughts, that's the right way of seeing things.Last edited by itsyours; May 9th, 2006 at 11:06 PM.

Your post is boring and hard to read. Could you please break it down to paragraphs and remove most of the fluff from it. Just a friendly advice.

If I knew I only had 24 hours to live,I would probably kill myself instead of waiting for the end to come.

May 9th, 2006 11:46 PM #14It's not selfish. What's wrong with people trying to live as long as possible to enjoy life with the people around them? Are you suggesting that medical research to find cures for diseases and cancer is the catalyst to selfishness? You miss and love your kids, your wifes/husbands too much and you don't want to leave (that is selfish, isn't it?), but you are dying anyway, so what the smart people will do?

Sure I'll control my last moments. I'm not going out in a moment of pain, nah, I'm going to go out with an IV in my arm giving me a good dose of morphine going into my system.
Opiates have a nice way of simply making you fall asleep, and if I am terminally ill, thats the way I want to be eased into it.
