I was thinking of driving to Vancouver from Toronto as vacation in early July. To lower the costs, I was hoping to find someone who is willing to pay me to drive his car to Vancouver from Toronto. Any suggestions on how I could find such person? Are there any sites that help me find these people?

You're probably just best off posting something on Craigslist, but finding someone in that position might be tough...I don't think there's really a central place people go looking for those types of services since they're not super common.

i think it's cheaper and easier to just ship freight their car there, so not sureif anyone wants a stranger to drive their car across the country.
worth a Cl post tho._______________

A fair few years ago it was possible to drive new cars west-and elsewhere. Money going which way depended on time of year etc, summertime would cost the driver a little.
That was also the time it was possible to stand at the side of the then 4 lane 400 highway in Downsview and thumb a ride

I remember people taking cars over the wintertime here in Toronto and driving them to Florida for the owner as he flew down, the person got a coach ride back from Florida to Toronto when the car arrived.

You can try calling Toronto Drive-Away to see if they have any vehicles that need to be driven to western Canada.

You can also look at uShip.com. I don't think people will pay you much to drive their car (I'd be surprised if you get more than a few hundred dollars (probably not enough to cover the gas)) but you will get a free vehicle to make the trip.

There used to be a firm years ago called Auto Driveaway that had a network of franchisees across North America for arranging such transport/travel, but it dwindled away over the years as car owners clued-in to the fact that their vehicles were likely to be severely abused en-route by the poorly screened transporters. No doubt the vehicle insurance for the franchisees was also getting prohibitively expensive, as they promised in their advertising to be fully responsible for the condition of every vehicle upon delivery.
In any case, all the transporter (driver) got in compensation from Auto Driveaway was the first tank of gas paid-for.
These days people who need cars transported long distances usually either drive them themselves, or ship them out with a truck or rail auto transport company. Or if a person is being transferred on their job they will often have their vehicle(s) hauled right inside those big 53' semi trailers with the rest of their possessions.Last edited by Wingding; Jun 1st, 2012 at 11:44 AM.
