We'd still be paying the same prices for everything in Canada, ie: double what they would cost in the U.S.

But does a middle-class indian family has the same purchasing power of a middle-class american family?

In a decade or two China's middle-class will outnumber the entire U.S. population, but they're not there yet.
According to wiki "the middle class is divided into two sections that combined constitute 47% to 49% of the population"

So assuming the population of 300 millions in the U.S. The middle class should be approximately 140 - 147 millions. You are only 53 - 60 millions off.

But China doesn't have as many super rich and "upper class" as the U.S. So the total purchasing power isn't anywhere close.

Also, as someone else mentioned, there's different definitions of "middle class". What would be middle class in China has the same purchasing power as lower class in the States.
