The site (images, banners, etc) are not hard, it's the back end programming and database management thats going to kill you. I would say a quick estimate for good job be about $5k to $7.5k. Depending on how much content / direction you provided the designer/coders.

How much will a site like this cost me?
I want to hire someone to create a website. I am wondering how much would it cost me?
I want to create a website like http://face-pic.com/
Basically what I am looking for is
1. A login system
2. A profile system (people that can login and update their profile)
3. A feature page with something like "the member of the day" and "webpage of the week"
4. A search engine where a person can use to search keywords in someone's profile, such as city, age, interests.
5. A person may post their website in their profile. I would like a directory listing that will display websites by ".com, .ca, .net, .org, etc". Whenever someone posts a link to their website, their website will automatically added to this directory. The person can see all the websites listed under .com, and can visit them. Next to each website listed, will be the username of that person's profile.
This is aimed at a small audience say starting 100-1000 people.
6. Good design. Will be adding banners later on, so site must be designed in a way to accomodate these banners later on.Last edited by MilkyWind; May 4th, 2006 at 07:47 PM.

5k?

I'd say for the above listed features, 350-500$ for the programming and perhaps 250$+ for a web designer to create a template the programmer can work with
Trust me, most coder can't design
and I'm one of them

You can save a ton of money if you're clear about your requirements and if you provide all the digital assets and other content. You want to create what's called a "brief" that outlines what your site's objectives are, what the must have/nice to have features are, timeline and other expectations. The more you can get on paper the better the result will be (and more economical too)!
What you have is a good start but you will have to beef it up considerably (also to get a realistic quote):
For example...A login system - do you want the system to be able to give the user their forgotten userID or password or just a plain login and then look up on the database type of system. Are you validating the username for things like profanity/sexual references/etc? Will there be a user email validation to prevent multiple registrations? List goes on...
1, 2 and 4 are relatively easy to do in a database. 3 is a bit more difficult as the member of the day/webpage of the week could be randomly generated or based on some predefined criteria (birthday, # of posts, votes, etc) - you have to put this in your brief.

There are turn-key solutions for social networking sites, gambling sites, online dating sites, portals, etc.
The prices vary wildly in each field. I've seen them selling for $500 to $10,000. There are also some free ones but they aren't very good.
Some of the turn key solutions that I have seen for gambling sites and online dating sites are really good.
You should google it for more information. That Face-Pic website seems like modified dating website.

I think Silverbullet is more on par.. websites don't come cheap, at least not good ones by professionals._______________

Just get a design, get some scripts and do it by yourself (edit the design and the script) - no cost at all. Well, this is what I'm doing if I want to create my own website.

May 4th, 2006 06:13 PM #11$500 for programming .. there is at least 2-3 weeks of programming (from scratch, bug testing, etc) for that site to work .. unless you're working for like $10/hr no way that ever going to happen. Also if you got a $10/hr coder no way its going to be a good site.

ah thanks for all the replies.
I was talking to a friend of mine last night and he said he should be able to do everything I needed with 20-30 hours of work. He's a comp sci student @ ubc in his last year and he's already doing coding/payment systems for several distinguished companies that want to sell their products online.
The only problem is he doesn't do design/graphics/images. I think I need to hire someone seperate to do that, but my friend said he would give a try at it first and show me some samples.Last edited by MilkyWind; May 4th, 2006 at 07:43 PM.

Hey anyone tryXOOP to program a dynamic site?
Design/graphics - expect to pay about $50-$300/hr depending on who you get. You might want to ask local colleges about graphics design or industrial design students that would be willing to do it for a nominal fee.
I got a logo done for my business by a student - cost me $250!
