Never put weight into promises, hopes, and trust, particularly when it's verbal. Seen too many coworkers get trapped going nowhere by thinking they'll get promoted by sticking around and doing a good job.

Yup, you lay your terms when accepting a new job offer, which almost always has a bump in pay. Better to do it now rather than wait a year on a shaky promise that may not realise and do it then. Who knows you might prove most valuable to the new team and get that promotion within a year or slightly more.
