How to protect Licence Plate
I am thinking to get a custom licence plate, and wondering what is the best way to protect plate being rusted or scratched. Thinking of putting those plastic hard cover ? Is it the one way to protect it ? Not sure if it can protect it from rusting. Any comments ?

Thanks, but my new car won't be ready until two weeks from now. I guess I can't apply for the custom # yet !

I have clear ones on my car and got pulled over, had to go in the next day to prove I removed them and they ripped up the ticket. I put them back on when I got home.
Cops go on a blitz now and then and here is the Motor Vehicle Act regulations on plastic plate covers...
Number plates, further violations
No other numbers to be exposed
13. (1) No number other than that upon the number plate furnished by the Ministry shall be exposed on any part of a motor vehicle or trailer in such a position or manner as to confuse the identity of the number plate. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 13 (1).
Number plate to be kept clean
(2) Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried. 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (7).
Obstruction prohibited
(3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5).
Same
(3.0.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a red light camera system. 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (1).
Same
(3.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device or material that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being identified by an electronic toll system. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (1).
Offence
(4) Every person who contravenes subsection (2), (3), (3.0.1) or (3.1) is guilty of an offence. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5); 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (2); 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (2).Last edited by Pete_Coach; Sep 18th, 2006 at 03:07 PM.

Sep 18th, 2006 10:12 AM #5yeah well you must be extremely lucky, cause most of the ppl i know had covers no problems whatsoever, and yeah cops drove behind them and did nothing to them.......you'll be fine with covers if your plate is visible.

Sep 18th, 2006 10:14 AM #6maybe you can purchase it now, but use it when you receive your car......not sure......anyways even if not, just don't give anyone your plate combo so they won't steal it from you.

I have also been pulled over and got a fix-it ticket for having a plastic cover. I think there was a thread a while back about them?

I thought it was legal (in Toronto anyways) to have clear plastic covers with no colour tint.
http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_2017.aspx
"Police say it's already tough enough to read a licence plate during a pursuit without the added obstruction of tint and/or colour."
"...but just remember, the only ones that are legal are those that are clear, or merely frame the licence plate."

Sep 18th, 2006 03:15 PM #9The opinion of whether the plate covers are clear enough is upt p the Officer. If he is having a bad day or is a bit behind in his quota, you may be the one to get a ticket.

THe main thing is not the cover is covering up the plate #, but it is the expiry sticker that is the important part.
The funny thing is, almost all dealerships give you their own clear cover with their ad on it. Or its the one that is a border that also may cover the sticker.
So they themselves are breaking the law.

Sep 18th, 2006 05:16 PM #11The question was about protecting the plate from rocks etc, particularily if you have a vanity plate. Covering the sticker was never an issue. The protection is primarily for the front plate, that has no sticker anyway.

Sep 18th, 2006 11:41 PM #12You're already too late to order custom plates to arrive at the same time as your car. I believe it takes 6-8 weeks to get custom plates made. Plus you don't need a car to put them on, just order them and register once they arrive. In the mean time you'll have to get regular plates and simply transfer the sticker.

You dont have to worry about rust with new plates, the damn things wont rust even if you try and make em rust. The only thing you really have to worry about is rock chips on the front plate, but the rear will be fine.
