everybody has a right to be safe. he should be isolated from other people so he wont injure others

How to stop this crazy old man?
was talking to a friend on msn that doesnt live in toronto, her mom works as the in-charge nurse at a old folks home, and not just regular old folks, all of them has some sort of mental illness
one old man in particular is very..."self protective", in that he beats the other old ppl whenever he gets the chance to...and we are talking injuries such as bruised up face, bloody nose and such (these may not seem very serious but for 80+ year olds, these are pretty serious)
so what do you suggest they do about it?
and a sidenote, even if he kills someone, he wouldnt be sent to jail because its "not his fault" due to the mental illness(i personally think this is very unfair), and of course, he cant be locked in his room because thats violates freedom laws and stuff
keep in mind there are very limited amount of staff

There has to be some sortof rules about this behaviour and a plan of action if this behavour occurs that would best suit the needs of the old age home and ALL it's memebers. If he is a literally beating up other people then can't he be relocated to another institution that is more fitting?

Why is he not in a mental hospital or psychiatric ward where he can be treated instead of a nursing home for old folks??? He will not get proper care or treatment in a nursing home and could be dangerous to those around him. Putting someone in a mental hospital is not demeaning but helpful to those who require it ..... otherwise tell u friends mom to put him in a strait jacket.

this institution is funded by the gov, and the department that she works in is specialised in taking care of ppl with mental illnes, which is what the old guy has, so he can't and won't be kicked out even if he really does kill someone one day, this is the most extreme "patient" they've ever had
i can't explain why "it's not his fault if he kills someone, cuz he has a mental illness" is a resonable excuse, cuz i personally strongly disagree with it, but that's what my friend's mom said...that's just how it works apparently...

why not just put him on a different schedule than everyone else.
if most of the patients eat at 4, he'll eat at 5
activity time at 3? he can have his activity time at 6
but then again he'd probably become even more depressed (if he already is) cuz he'll be singled out from the other patients.

I don't see how your story is possible, even if he is mentally ill how can the facility allow him to be violent towards others?

My wife works in a nursing or old folks home and people in them with a history of physical abuse have procedures that have to be followed, in place by the govt but enforced by the administration of the home.
This is to protect both the staff and other residents.
Not enough staff is not an excuse and administration could be found liable for injuries if they dont provide sufficient staff. Also, the provincial govt regulates and checks homes on a continuing basis and acts on any complaint from either family of residents or staff.
If this is serious, it should be reported and normally there are an incredible amount of frivolous complaints investigated by the home and sometimes the authorities.
Physical incidents with dementia patients is quite common and they are normally in a lock down unit to prevent mixing and wandering outside the premises_______________

They can strap him into a comode or wheelchair with velcro or cloth tiedowns... this is totally protected under the law because he's a danger to other people... and because he's assaulting other people. He's not being confined because he's still mobile.
The staff are protected to because they're preventing assault.
