How were the Black Friday and Boxing Day sales last year on large TVs - 75" to 85"?

I currently have a Sony VPL-HW45ES 1080p projector throwing a 90" image, but the room isn't perfectly light controlled and I'd like a better picture during daytime and with ambient light.

Thus, I'm considering getting a 75"+ LCD TV. OLED of that size will be too expensive, but I'm considering a 75" LED LCD. I'm thinking something like a Sony 75" X940E:

XBR-75X940E

It is a 2017 model that retails for $5199 currently. Teletime has it for $4060, but I have no idea how reliable Teletime is as a retailer.

How were Black Friday and Boxing Week sales last year for TVs of this size and price class? Considering I still have a lot of bulb life left on my projector, I'm inclined to wait until next year, but if the price is right I may buy this year. I'm not keen on the 2nd tier brands like Vizio, but would consider it.

The xbr75900e was 3298. At Boxing Day and in March.
Wish I had bought it then. Can’t find it for less than 3798 now

I believe the X900E retail price now is $3799.99 actually. Was it higher before? Anyhow $32xx seems like a decent price for that model although I think I’d wait for the X900F at this point.

I don’t like the legs of the F
I much prefer the stand of the E
But yes the going price seems to be 3800. Haven’t seen any deals lately

Last year Sony x850e was on sale for $2500 + $250 GC on BB VIP day (day before BF). Same deal BD except no GC. Repeated deals throughout the year (sometime with, sometime without GC). Visions matched this deal but wouldn't go any lower (i bought this on VIP day)
Sony x900e also had a deal @ ~$3200 (and 10% GC).

Samsung 75mu8000 was on sale for $2500-2600 during holiday season as well. 82" went on sale boxing day for 3500 (and Visions was trying to push it saying they had a lot of stock but wouldn't go any lower than that price cause it was a great deal). In the end i was able to get this @ London Drugs for just over $2900 after tax with a receiver (needed a 4k receiver for the Sony, which is my gaming tv... reason i went with x850e since its an IPS panel) in Jan.

As far as deal goes, don't expect much for 75" yet. The focus is still 65" so pricing will be more aggressive there and you will pay a premium for anything over 70". Also 75x940e is a clearance model so price will only get to a certain point and be OOS. Not every store carries it (actually not many do) because its not a popular model. My guess is you might see it close to 75x900e price but that's about it but a lot of variable because again it should be label as clearance soon (if not already) so once its gone, its gone. Plus is there really any reason you want a 75x940e over a 75x900f? The difference between the two aren't too big (tho if you don't game, x940e is better, if you game x900f is better) but x900f should be much easier to find and much likely for there to be a deal @$3k or lower come black friday. At the very least you won't be limited to smaller stores because BB/Visions/etc will all clear out x940e before BF.

Slightly out of your size range, but 70" X690E was $1200 last Boxing Day.

Good info thanks. The reason I was aiming at the X940E is because it has better blacks than the X900F. I know the X900F has better motion handling, but overall I think I'd enjoy the picture of the X940E better, judging by the reviews, since I am neither a gamer nor do I watch a lot of sports. The local dimming of the X940E is supposed to be absolutely stellar. Also, while its viewing angles aren't great, it's supposed to be a fair bit better than the X900F for viewing angles. (Both are VA panels.) In my home theatre, I usually would be sitting dead-on, but some family members might be 15 degrees off axis. The main use of this panel would be for Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray HDR movies, Netflix / Amazon Prime, and TV (but only occasionally sports).

Luckily I timed by receiver purchases perfectly. Both my Denon AVR-S710W and my Marantz SR5010 will get updates to support Dolby Vision this year. Interestingly the S710W is the earliest and lowest end Denon model to get the update, and the SR5010 is the earliest and lowest end non-slim Marantz model to get the update. Who says strategic purchasing doesn't work? :)

Now my only problem is convincing the wife. She says she likes the "theatre-like" experience of a projector now that she's used to it. However, I don't think she knows what she's missing. When I upgraded from a Panasonic AX-200U 720p projector to our Sony VPL-HW45ES 1080p projector, she asked why, because the 720p projector worked fine. I think she now appreciates the 1080p projector. However, I don't think she's ever seen a true 4K full HDR TV. Our 43" XBR 43X800E doesn't quite count. While it is wide colour gamut and reasonably bright for that class of TV, it's an IPS panels so blacks are not so good. (It's the living room TV for the kids with wide seating angles and lots of windows.) I got that one open box so on sale too, although given the poor blacks I'm surprised these are priced so high in the first place. The VA panels are all cheaper. Maybe it's to cater to the PC IPS types.

Teletime has it for $3172.49 but as mentioned above, I don’t know how reliable they are.

Plus they have other TVs without pricing in their “private deals”. What are their “private deals”?

Here are last year’s Black Friday prices at Best Buy:

x900e 65 1899
x900e 75 3499
x900e 55 1299
x800e 55 999
x850e 65 1599
x690e 60 849.99

From this thread:

https://forums.redflagdeals.com/various ... 133728/99/

That thread also has some info on Teletime. It seems most are satisfied because their prices are consistently low, but they sometimes have some dubious practices such as selling open box as new. They also have a price protection gimmick but it turns out their price protection may not be honoured.

How do you know they have no stock? Did you contact them, cuz it doesn't say anything on their site. Just wondering.

BTW, I just realized that the X900E doesn't get Dolby Vision. Hmmm... Both the X930E/X940E and X900F get Dolby Vision though.

My X800E won't get Dolby Vision either, but the X800F does. Not a huge deal there though since it's a sub-500 nit 43" IPS TV mainly for the kids. They haven't even announced the X800F yet anyway.

I made it up obviously.

Ok, another reason to be wary of them. Did they try to bait and switch for other models?

I've been told the X940E is not a clearance model after all. There is no X940F coming for 2018. It likely won't be updated until 2019.

So, there may be a chance of a decent sale price on the X940F come fall/winter.

I believe sony only release 900f this year, no 930/940 (at least i dont remember seeing either announced). That doesnt mean 940e wont be cleared out tho because it is a 2017 model and also the fact there wasnt a lot of actual stock to start with (not a high demand model, more so 75”). Plus due to upgrades in 900f, its close to 930/940 already meaning no real room for sony to release another model. At least not enough room to release something between x900f and z9f.

Also note there werent really any deals on z9d last year despite no z9e. Not really expecting z9d deals now either after z9f annouce because stock was from 2016 and there really likely isnt much stock.
