I decided to take a part-time job as a Server at a nice restaurant. Any advice?
Hey guys,
I've been working full-time for a year since I've graduated, but I still find that I have lots of free time on my hands. By closing my car detailing business for the season, I've found a lot of time to myself and instead of waste it watching TV or what not, I took a job as a server at a nice restaurant. I figure flexible schedule as well as cash tips would be great to help me attack that student loan faster. Any advice to succeed or do really well?
I've got experience in food & beverage industry, I worked at a cafe when I was in school, and had a part-time job at the LCBO as well as summer work with Coca-Cola. I love beer, wine, and food of course. Any ideas on how I can do well/maximize my tips?

Since you're new to serving, stick to what you're good at first. Typically it would be your communication and interpersonal skills...those go a long way in the beginning. Play the "I'm new here" card as much you can. Yes, people may still not appreciate the fact service is slower, but they will understand as long as you tell them you're new. You say you know your food/beer/wine well...this will go a long way too in a formal setting so play that often, especially when asked.
Slow service is going to hurt you at first, because you're new, you're trying to learn processes, where things are and whatnot, but once you get the hang of it youll be fine.
Good luck.

I work as a server fulltime and the best advice I can give you is that, during the first few months, you should be proactive and try to learn the menu and the food as fast as you can. In addition, get used to the POS system because it'll be easier for you to punch in food and at a faster rate which means youll be quicker and that helps when it gets busy, which it will as the holiday season is coming up. Be ready for long shifts and working on most weekends as that is the busiest time. Dont be afraid to ask questions, if you dont know something the customer asks, ask somebody because if you make a mistake, youll have to end up paying for it, with a discount of course. Just be yourself and smile and be polite and the rest should follow with time.
As a server, if you work hard, the tips are great! Oh and buy a pair of good non water slip shoes as youll be on your feet the entire time. I hope that helps!

+1. Make sure you invest your 100k a year in tips wisely.
