He's the fattest SOB I've ever seen in my life... but he also pretty tough, rude and in a strange twist something to be feared, and hopefully trusted with Toronto... I will probably eat those words soon enough...

I was at my heaviest and most depressedish when I ate more vegetables.
Seriously, I ate hardly any meat, low fat, skim milk, margarine, and had raw vegetables for lunch and weighed like 215 lbs.
Now I eat mostly fat and protein stuff... butter, whole milk, more meat, more eggs, full fat mayo, etc... but less bread and baked stuff...and I am like 175 lbs.
And pretty much the only thing I changed was what I ate.
So, basically, cut back the carbs and processed food and if you are like me you'll lose weight.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked mbg for this post.

For otherwise healthy people, carbs aren't inherently fattening. It's excess calories beyond what your body needs that gets you fat ...not carbs per se.
And speaking of fat - Rob Ford is definitely fat.
Some say he makes " Fat Bastard " look like a Chippendale dancer by comparison;).

Say what you like, but I am eating more calories than I used to and I lost weight.
If you disagree, feed someone 2500 calories of bread and 2500 calories of nuts and see who gets fatter. If you are right, there will be no difference.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked mbg for this post.

Well, if you're an otherwise healthy person, you lost weight because you created a calorie deficit ...it due to losing calories....not carbs per se.
Carbs in and of themselves in otherwise healthy people aren't inherently fattening.

Generally speaking , nuts are about 80% fat.....white and whole wheat bread is typically somewhere around 10% - 15% fat.
Why would 2,500 calories of a food consisting of about 10% - 15% fat make you considerably fatter than 2,500 calories of a food consisting of about 80% fat ?
How do carbs make you fat ?_______________

Are you telling me that there's no such thing as two healthy people eating the same food and with the same activity levels but who put on weight in a different fashion? You can't be telling me that because everyone knows examples of where it's not true.
You're also asking me to believe that people who aren't fat fine-tune their calorie intake so precisely that they are avoiding eating that extra 20 calories a day that would accumulate to quite a bit of fat over the course of a year if it was simply a matter of calories in - calories out = fat.

I don't know how they make you fat.
One theory is to do with insulin release caused by the rapid breakdown of starch into glucose. That theory says that the insulin release prevents your body from accessing stored fat while still allowing fat to be stored in cells as a way of disposing of the excess glucose. I don't know if it's true or not, but I know I feel better not eating so many carbs.
But there are other issues too, such as how the body deals with fructose vs glucose.
There's no way it's as simple as calories in - calories out.
The number of people who've tried and failed with calorie counting should tell you that something's wrong with it. I don't know why anyone still believes in it.
My opinion: nutrition is not a real science and never will be. There are too many variables involved that you can't control.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked mbg for this post.

AFAIK Doug Ford is still a vegetarian -- for ethical reasons (horrified by his experience working at a meat-processing plant as a teenager).LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked JHW for this post.
