I received a email from abuse@rogers.com

Rogers Cable (Rogers) has received a notice stating that activities
associated with your IP address are infringing copyright in material(s)
owned or exclusively licensed by others.

The full notice is appended to this e-mail below.

Under section 4(d) of the Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet End User
Agreement (EUA) and Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), you are prohibited from
using the Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet service to engage in illegal
activities, including activities that infringe copyright. Copies of our
EUA and AUP are available at:

then it goes on to mention a movie that i downloaded,



On behalf of New Line, owner of the exclusive rights to the
copyrighted material at issue in this notice, we hereby state, that we have a
good faith belief
that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized
by New Line, its respective agents, or the law.

Also, we hereby state, under penalty of perjury, under the laws of the
State of California and under the laws of the United States, that the
information in
this notification is accurate and that we are authorized to act on
behalf of the owner of the exclusive rights being infringed as set forth
in this
notification.

Please contact us at the above-listed address or by replying to this
email should you have any questions


will they cancel my service for the first ime or is this just a warning?

Lots of people have received similar emails from Rogers. In general, they're just passing the message along, nothing to worry about.

Yup. Notice all they ever mention are United States and California laws, which are not enforceable in Canada.

Let's hope the new copyright law thing for Canada does not ever get passed.

Read it carefully. Then continue doing whatever it is you're doing... it's a scare tactic. Cheaper and more effective against the avg user.

My understanding is that it is illegal in Canada to record IP addresses. If that is the case, isn't it a contradiction if Rogers is trying to enforce US rules?

Yeah what does the state of California have to do with us? Who cares about US laws here in Canada?
