Unless you're doing something really processor intensive (in which case you probably shouldn't be looking at this laptop to begin with), I'd base the m3 vs m5 decision on storage requirement instead. If 256GB is cutting it close, it's worth it to move up to m5 with 512GB (with the bonus of faster processor). My 2c.
How about playing games like league of legends? Will the two processors make a difference? I don't think I use more than 100gb.

The sweet deal, the old trusty MBP or the wife.... one of them has to be accidentally dropped off the balcony. Smirking Face

You can do this... Open up the bottom cover, disconnect the battery cable, close the bottom cover and tell your woman the MBP battery is done. Of course, you will reconnect the battery cable back before you list it in Kijiji.

FYI. My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) have 1176 cycle right now and the battery status is "Replace now".

Determining battery cycle count for Mac notebooks
Learn how to determine the number of cycles your Mac notebook's battery has.

About battery cycles

When you use your Mac notebook, its battery goes through charge cycles. A charge cycle happens when you use all of the battery’s power—but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge.
For example, you could use half of your notebook's charge in one day, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two. In this way, it might take several days to complete a cycle.
Batteries have a limited amount of charge cycles before they're considered to be consumed. Once consumed, a replacement battery is recommended. You can use your battery after it reaches its maximum cycle count, but you might notice a reduction in your battery life.
Knowing how many charge cycles your battery has and how many are left can help you determine when a battery replacement is required. For best performance, replace your battery when you reach its maximum cycle count.
Follow these steps to access information about your Mac notebook battery, including its cycle count:
Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu. Choose System Information.
Under the Hardware section of the System Information window, select Power. The current cycle count is listed under the Battery Information section.

Identify your computer

Cycle count limits vary between Mac models. For help identifying your Mac notebook, use the Tech Specs page or the articles below.

My Summary:
April 24 ordered online, submitting legit business name, email, and cc info with order
April 25 received IGF Sales email
Then no phone call, no tracking email, track by reference never worked for me.
May 1 received via UPS 2 m5's, both Space Grey, both look brand new, one with 4 cycles, one with 5
Our first Apple computers (though we are both iPhone users)
Thanks OP and other contributors!

Can someone tell me what would be better for my own use, this Macbook 12 inch or a pre-owned Macbook Pro Retina 2015 (goes for around $1000)?

Im mostly using this to hook up to a computer monitor and wireless mouse/keyboard combo for home use. Occasional portable use but id say I would be keeping it at home 70% of the time. Just purchased an LG 27UD68 4k monitor as well. I understand only the MBP would be able to run 4K comfortably? Any help would be appreciated :)

Your timeline is almost exactly same as mine but I still haven't received mine. I ordered M3 so that could be the reason.

Yes I know but at work all we use is office. One those days I that i don't want to lug my work laptop home, its nice to just work off of this thing without worrying about formatting. I've tried to play between both pages and word and the formatting messes up sometimes.

Got mine today, called same day to change color, still received the gray one. Don't wanna go through the hassle to replace it. It is in mint condition. Love it so far. Thanks OP.
