If I cut the land line, will I be able to use the intercom?
Hi all,
I am living in an apartment building, when friends come, in the lobby ,they have to punch a number on the intercom, and then my phone at home will ring, and I have to open the door by press a number on the key pad on my phone.
I just sign up a cell phone plan, and I don't stay at home much, thinking to cut the home phone, but will I still can use it to remote open the door?
Same at my TV, now I can switch to channel 59 to view the sercurt camera in the lobby entrance, if I unscribe the TV cable, will I still be able to view the camera?
Hope some one out there can give me answer, thx!

With my old building, the phone still rang for the buzzer even with no land line so I could let people in. Eventually I had to get a land line cause my wife talks on the phone too much for just a cell.
All depends on the building. Ask your manager.

I just went through the same thing as you did. I'm disconnecting my Bell phone service in the next few weeks.
I found out that it is dependent upon the door entry system that is installed.
In my building, we have an intercom (Mircom) that is hard-wired to the phone cable so you don't need active phone service. This is called 'no subscriber line'.
The Mircom is also capable of calling any number (including cell) so you can let guests in. This feature isn't installed in my building.
Did you also know that you can have DSL over the phone line even if you don't have a Bell phone line? It's called 'dry DSL'. Google it. It's not that good of a deal because Bell is charging independent ISPs a fee to do this (about $15) so one would only save about $10/month.
I'm getting rid of my phone line and sharing Internet with my neighbour with a wireless g access point.

Yes, It will work. My sister moved from a condo that uses the dial up type (new and cheaper) that works with any cell phone or land line anywhere that is not long distance. The condo she moved into uses the old EnterPhone 2000 system which still works (with no dial tone), you just need phones. The only problem you may have is explaining that it will work to someone, but then again, why bother. If the need your number, give them your cell. If they don't need your number, it is the older style and just add phones to the jacks. The super will put your name beside the appropriate code to dial downstairs. They don't need to know, they will just get confused. I have installed new ones and repaired the old style, so fear not.
