I stoped reading at:
the Playstation is a byproduct of the leisure time and disposable income available to Amerikans.

I don't think it can be directly tied to the PS2. The year 2000 brought a huge spike in all sorts of electronics and computers. Although I would not be surprised at all at the conflicts that go on to secure these valuable resources. Whether it's diamond, gold, or coltan for electronics it's still a war for limited resources. What I find more interesting is the fact that people consume these kind of products every day without realizing where they come from. It's sad but at the end of the day, people just want their iPods and laptops.
Perhaps there will be a trend towards fair-trade electronics in the future, haha.
Edit: Forgot to say thanks for the good read!Last edited by sxz; Apr 2nd, 2009 at 09:13 AM.

They are blaming America when the Playstation 2 or Ipods are for sale in all parts of the world? And Sony is a Japanese company...

Don't get too caught up in the details. The purpose of the post was to raise awareness of the behind-the-scenes activities that ultimately ends up in the electronics we use every day.

i made a post awhile ago asking if hierarchies exist because people take advantage of each other
in North America and wealthy countries to be living like we/they do, 3rd world countries have to exist to accommodate them
kinda like how Janitors exist and people who do those jobs not considered cool or the wealthy would have to do that themselves....
if all countries were even steven, not sure if it would happen.....sucks

What's with all the skepticism in this thread? It's not that hard to imagine that coltan, like any other precious ore, can be exploited.
The OP's blog post takes a huge chunk from the original article at Toward Freedom:
http://towardfreedom.com/home/content/view/1352/1
Granted, they are a social activitism website, you will have to take the article with a grain of salt. However there are other news sites which have written on the issue like in the Yahoo! Games & Wired articles here (which also mentions the Toward Freedom article but adds a bit more):

They make it seem like the PS2 was the only electronic device using this ore; countless electronic devices use it as well.
