Installing Vista problem
Didn't know where else to ask so here I go. I just put together a i7 PC with an MSI Eclipse motherboard, 920 i7 CPU, 8GB DDR3 memory, an SATA LG DVD burner and 2 WD 500GB SATA2 hard drives. I am trying to install Vista 64bit edition. I put the cd in, it says copying files, switches to a screen showing those green vertical lines going across and then it just freezes. Anyone know what the problem could be. I even tried an XP cd and it would get stuck after 11% and it says driver.cab on the bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

You have 8GB of ram? 4 x 2GB DIMMs? Is the ram placed in dual channel mode?

actually 4 x 2Gb placed in triple mode. I spoke to a computer store and he recommended I remove the 6GB and just install with 2Gb and see what happens. He said its either the memory, the DVD drive or the motherboard. Hopefully, its not the board because I bought the board in the US and brought it over.

Is your ram compatible with corei7? (ie: 1.65v)
Check your motherboard manual, it tells you exactly which slots to use if you're going to use 1 stick, 2 sticks, 3 sticks, or in your case, 4 sticks
Try running the system with just 1 stick of ram seeif the problem continues, if it doesnt, then install away and figure out which module is causing the problem.
My system wouldnt even boot with 3 sticks of ram :p

Try the one stick, get Vista installed, then try either 8GB in dual channel mode or 6GB in triple channel mode.
Also, like nfuz said, make sure your ram is capable of running with 1.65v or less.

Yes, I placed them the way the manual said. The memory is Patriot Viper FIN DDR3 1333MHz 1.7v. I removed the 3 bars and just left one and it went into the install menu. I got the eternity version of vista 64 bit. It copied the files and now its at 0% for expanding

Vista Eternity = pirated edition.
This forum isn't for discussing piracy, plenty other places for that.
To admit that you are using pirated stuff... is just silly

Shoot, I had no idea. I thought I could use my Ultimate key to be honest
I still can't get it to work. It was at 2% and then it froze. Any ideas?

I doubt that it's a memory problem. Check the hard drive setting in BIOS. Set your SATA drive as Native IDE and see if installation goes through. You can always try W7

Except if I understand i7 correctly it is triple channel and not dual channel, and will only run with 1, 3 or 6 sticks of ram. Which if that is the case the OP needs to get one more stick and go 9 GB.

Download and burn Memtest, try it with variations of different sticks to see if there are problems.

change the ram stick
and then try your "genuine" windows vista ultimate dvd...
where are you installing from anyways?
I assume you are botting from CD< and are not already in windows trying to install over a copy of another windows right
