I have a question, does the primary driver on a vehicle have to be the legal owner of the vehicle?
Here is my (somewhat complicated) situation. Our family has 3 cars and my mom, dad and bro are the primary drivers on each of them and i am the occasional driver on all of them, and everyone can drive as an occasional on any of them. The policy is under my mom's name. I have been driving my dad's car for a while as he has been out of country, and this way the insurance has been OK for me. Now i want to replace the car with a newer leased car. So, is it possible that I lease a car under my name and my dad will be the primary driver on it for cheaper insurance purposes?

Im going to say yes.
Reason being: I recently got an insurance quote for a new car were thinking of purchasing. Since there are more than one drivers in the house 3 to be exact, they are forcing my dad to be primary of one vehicle and me or my sister to be primary of the other. Even though the other car will be registered under my dads name.
but lets have an official broker answer this one.

My understanding is the owner of the vehicle is the only person who insurance company's will setup a policy with. If it's in your name, then you will be the primary driver in the insurance company's eyes.

Not necessarily... when I moved out of my parents' place some years back, I was "borrowing" my dad's car. The insurance was in his name, but I was the primary driver with nobody else on it because I was the only one living at my place. I wrote my dad a cheque each month for the auto insurance.

well it looks like so long as you hold the deed to the car you an put insurance on it and make someone else the primary.
It would however, be your policy

If you lease/purchase a vehicle and the registration shows your name, you will have to purchase a new policy and you will be listed as the principle operator - the policy has to read the same name as the vehicle registration.

If i lent my car out to my buddy and he gets into an at fault accident, or even a not at fault accident.
would premiums rise more than it would if i were driving.

Are you sure this is correct?
This was my situation in Feb 2009. I purchased a new car under my name to get the graduate rebate so registration is under my name. Now when it came to insurance, my mom is primary on this car and I am secondary/occasional. My dad is primary on his older civic. So we have 3 drivers and 2 cars. We are with RBC Insurance.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the OAP1 that says the owner must be the primary driver on the insurance. Can you please tell me what section you're taking that from?
