Insurance for student who will be w/o access to car when school is in session
Here's my situation:
-Just got my G2
-Completed Drivers Ed.
-Have access to dad's car (the only car our family owns actually)
-Mom is already listed as a secondary driver for that car
-I will only have access to the car when I am not at school since I will have to live in Waterloo
-I will be alternating between 4 months of school, and 4 months of work for the next 4 years (i.e. I am off school right now, and will be off school again from Jan. 07-May 07 etc.)
My question is, what can I do to save some money on insurance?

Bump.
And I was reading on another site that some insurance companies give discounts for maintaining a B average in school. Do they do that Ontario?

Some insurance companies will give you a 60-65% discount if you're a student away from home (read: more than 120-150km away) for 8 months/year... which isn't exactly your case, though...
The GM insurance company, whatever it's called, does it, and I think RBC does too, now...

I would just get added to the insurance. In your case, you'll be listed as an occasional driver, and the increase will be very small in comparison with the premium.
Unfortunately there's no substitute to calling around for rates for special cases like this.

Yeah, the company I work for gives you approx 70% off for students that live away from home for school. However, there is a catch.. to be eligible you have to go to a school that is 80km away from home.
So if thats' what your situation is.. I suggest you call your company and see if they offer something similar.. if not.. just keep it the way it is.. as removing you from the policy will only cause a lapse in insurance.. and that is not something you want to have as it will give you major headaches if you wish to get insurance in the future.
