Does she have to be insured on the car? There's another thread going on right now where the driver got into an accident but wasn't insured on his fathers car.
If she's only going to be driving it occasionally, and lives at the same address that you do, do you formally need insurance?
Anyone know for sure?

insuring my spouse
my wife just got her drivers liscense and she will be driving our new car occasionally (we have not bought the car yet but pretty soon). I did not add her as a driver on my old car since she is not driving it and I plan to sell it after buyinh the new car.
What are my options to get the cheapest insurance- should I be the primary driver or my wife be the primary driver - is there any other option?
I am from Montreal, Quebec.

RamJaane:
Legally speaking, once your wife has got her driver's licence you have to add her onto your policy as a second driver no matter what. If you are going to have only one car you will remain as the primary driver and she the second driver so your insurance premium will not skyrocket. When you have bought your new car and hhave not sold your old one yet you should put her as the primary driver on the old car and yourself on the new one. I have pretty much just gone through the same thing and my advice to you is to have your beloved wife attain the MTO-approved beginner driver education certificate so that you can acquire a discount on the premium charged on her part._______________

I have signed this form before to be excluded from driving other vehicles in my household.Last edited by Narci; Jun 13th, 2006 at 01:12 PM.

In general, if your wife/husband (same household address) recently got a driving licence. You need to notify your insurance company. If you own 2 cars before (you are principle driver on both) then each of you will become a principle on 1 of them. The other will insure as second driver.
However in some cases, if you know your wife/husband will not drive 1 of them then sign the 28A to reduce insurance cost.
