Integrating Gmail with Outlook 2010/Win7

So, just wondering how many others are doing this and how they went about it. I used to just use Gmail as web mail but due to the availability of IMAP I decided to give it a go in Outlook. Part of the reason was I couldn't integrate Gmail as pure webmail into Windows 7. I mean, you'd think there would be some good Systray-based Notifiers which use Aero, or a well-designed non-memory-leaking Windows 7 desktop gadget by now...

Anyways what I find with using Gmail IMAP in Outlook is that either:

1. you keep your labels, but you have the annoying [Gmail] folder tree
2. or you merge the [Gmail] folder tree with regular Outlook folders, but you lose your labels

Any suggestions? Ideally I want it all set up so when I log in, a gadget will tell me how many new messages I have, any tasks or appointments for the day, etc. It's proving kludgier than I thought it would be, though.
