Hi guys, how much does it cost to use the internet service when you go cruising? I am going on a 1-week cruise and it would be nice if I could stay in touch by email (at least that's why my boss said!). I am just wondering how much it is going to cost me....any ideas?

Unless you've cruised before and belong to a Captains Club or something...it's quite expensive.
Your best bet would be to go into your first port and buy a prepaid time card, this card should be useable in all the ports you travel to. It's alot cheaper that way...I think we got a card and it worked out to about 3 cents a min. or something...onboard it was like 75 cents USD a minute!!

At the risk of highjacking this thread (I hope I don't) but how about phone calls? What the best way? Call for the ship / call from the port / call collect / bill to room / call with calling card? Any suggestions?

Isn't the whole point of a cruise to get away from work? Tell your boss you're on vacation and if he wants to contact you, he can pay for it.

Bring a laptop and use it on a wifi connection in port or find an internet cafe on your ports of call. You can use it on the ship, but other members here hit the nail on the head. You will pay 50 cents to a minute for service that varies from lite hispeed to less than dial up. And forget about calling long distance, the $10 to $20 a minute is a reality! I was on Carnival this last week for 5 days and these rates are accurate.
Let your employer know you would be happy to stay in contact with them by email, but they would be responsibe for the costs associated in doing so. If you keeping in touch with them is as important as they make it sound, they should be more than willing to take care of the costs in doing so.

It's too bad you can't just get away from it all during your vacation.
It reminds me of the Toyota commercial with a bunch of guys in the truck.
The one guy is playing with his PDA or something and the other guy takes it and throws it out the window.

Princess Cruises charges something like $0.35 per minute for Internet usage, 1st minute is free. I found the service more stable in thier Net Cafe than using the wifi service...Absolutely do not use the phone on borad or in your cabin to make long distance or local island calls. They will add it to your ship on board account. If you are paying your acct my CC keep in mind most CC companies add 2.5% to any USD charges so your fees will be compounding. ..That sounds about right? its cheaper to use a cell phone. But you won't get a signal most of the time anyway....Couldn't have said it better myself, just enjoy your cruise & deal with work when you get back. although I brought my laptop, I only used it @ the airport & on the plane to watch my collection of vintage pRons, listen to my vintage bootlegged music collection & read bootleg eboks. If you are going to use the Net on yrou ship be sure to chek in with RFD & give us an update of how your doing.

Sorry, I can't recall the name on the card we bought. SeaPort maybe??
We just went into an Internet Cafe place in one of the ports and bought a card with a preset time limit, I think we bought a 60 min card, with some bonus minutes and it worked out to .3c a minute when I did the calculation...wife paid with a $5 and got change back..it was cheap.
This was the Alaskan cruise and the card listed all the ports that this particular cafe was located in...keep in mind though, they're popular, and it was super busy at each location, but we did get a computer to use and they also have wireless and wired drops so you can just take your laptop and use their AP or plug in.
