what is the best one to take credit cards online and over the phone? probably not paypal since you need a paypal account so doing it over the phone won't work, which one do you recommend?

A number of good links are posted above. Start by going to your bank and looking at what they offer. Go to Costco.ca and get the Nova brochure. Check out some of the other links here...

You have to consider stuff beyond the actual discount rates. How much does a terminal rental cost? Monthly fees? Extra fees for taking American Express and other cards? Can you take debit or not? Does the provider integrate with an online payment gateway? Is there an amount the processor will withhold for a set period of time to prevent against chargebacks, keeping you from reinvesting that money back into your business?

Alot of the above will depend on how YOU do business. Since we don't know this, we can't possibly tell you which is the BEST.

FYI - the freebooks.com blog ranks pay gateway popularity. Authorize.net is the biggie in the US and PSIGATE dominates in Canada. They excluded PayPal and 2CheckOut.
