iPhone 3.1, data block, but it's not...
Hi there,
Does anyone have any issue with 3.1? For some reason, I have a data plan block and before 3.1, if I accidently hit weather or stock, it will prompt up " you're not sign up to a data plan" and ask me to connect to a wireless network if availible.
However, after 3.1 update (and a completely screwed over update), it does connect via cell data because I got a charge for data on my invoice when I accidently check the weather when I'm not home. I was like WTF? It doesn't give me the prompts that I have.
Now I check with Fido, my settings still remains the same, data block and all, now they did an additional block, removing me access to the 3G icon anymore. Not sure if it affects calls (between normal line in 3G line for calls only), since I use my iPhone on emergency only...
What is your take?

Think I might be in the same boat, the last time I used data was like in July and it was only 2.0kb. I checked yesterday and it somehow went to 330kb!!! I called Fido and he said there was no data incurred....
I think something's up...

Yeah, I tried click stocks while the E logo was up (I'm data blocked..prior to 3.1 I'd get a notification just like you did). Well now, it keeps trying to load data...although nothing kicks in - but I did incur data.
Definitely a strange 3.1 issue, so many nuances with this phone.

I made a thread about this on the weekend, I called them and even checked the real time data charges on the website and they havent charged me. So its definately due to the new OS.

Is anyone experiencing this with Rogers?
I haven't upgraded to 3.1 yet, but I plan to soon and I'd rather not have issues. Still I can use SBSettings to disable everything I don't want, but I'd rather not incur ghost charges, last time I accidentally used data I was charged an extra 50 bucks on my bill.

Im with Rogers, as long as you have put the data blocks on, there are 2 i think and the fake apn, you should be safe.

Its the same for me as well, ever since my update that I didn't want i keep on getting a popup on saying how i need to get data of some sort. Its been like this for about a month and half, check my bill and thankfully i didn't get ding for roaming like i did couple months ago for an extra $40

Newbie
have you tried the fake apn as suggested above? i remember when i first got my iphone, there was a new zealand site you access from your iphone via wifi (hence no data), and that would load a fake apn which would block you from all data via cellular network. as for 3g calls, you cant really tell the difference between edge call quality and 3g. there is a pretty big difference in battery drainage though.

I don't think it's OS 3.1 because I'm on 3.01 (jailbroken) and just noticed the same issue this morning.
I have data block on my account, 3G turned off (mainly to conserve battery since I'm not using data) and connect only by wifi at home or anywhere else. This morning I noticed that the Edge ("E" symbol) or GRPS (blue/white circle symbol) now appears whenever I don't have a wifi symbol. This definitely only began happening recently, and a quick Google search found that it's happened to others in the same situation (iPhone on Rogers/Fido,with data block and using wifi only) as well.
And then when I checked my data usage, it went from a clean 0KB sent/received that I've had since day 1, to 119KB/1KB as of right now. However, I also tested this by turning off wifi and turning on 3G and trying to load a website in Safari, but it couldn't.
I was under the impression that if no connection can be made then no data could be sent? I had tested the data block on the first day I received my iPhone and it was no problem (0KB/0KB sent/received) but all of a sudden the numbers have changed? Also, why is it suddenly connecting to Edge or GPRS when my iPhone has never done so in the past? I've had a jailbroken OS 3.01 since I bought this thing.

Hi there,
I did contact Apple about it, because it was fine until I updated to 3.1. Fido can't do anything but block everything now (including 3G), so my calls kinda sound a bit static honestly when I make calls. I want my prompts back honestly, even it's annoying, but at least if I accidently click on those weather or Safari when I'm not near a Wifi, it won't just go get data.
Now it just "failed", no more prompts.
