iPhone 3G uses the Infineon PMB 2525 HammerHead II GPS Reciever
In short, the Infineon Hammer Head II is the worlds smallest GPS reciever designed for mobile phones, portable gps units, and PDAs. This GPS chip is found in the new iPhone 3G, therefore making the iphone 3G a true GPS phone.

here is a link to the story:

SPECS on the GPS Reciever is on PDF as well:

Some great features on this GPS chip are:
- state of the art chip scale packaging technology
- position fix times as fast as one second
- optimized for personal navigation performance
- algorithms to mitigate multipath errors
- advanced low power technology with smart power management
- high sensitivity -160 dBm enabling indoor and deep urban operations
- Multimode operation - MS based, MS-assisted, Autonomous and Enhanced autonomous
- Multiple protocol operation
- Standard compliant
- Emergency assistance
- Location games
- Real-time traffic information
- No external CPU or memory required
- A-GPS baseband
P.S - this chip is a REAL GPS chip.. also acts as an A-GPS as well..

I havent read up on the Infineon but I know it doesn't use SIRF III that's why it has no reception indoors whatsoever.

then don't be too quick to judge because the infineon chip is more sensitive than the SIRF III . It definitely works as well as the SIRF III chip. Will work as well SIRF's GSD3TW . probably not as well as the GSC3LTi because of the price factor. Definitely a great GPS chip that can outperform some SIRF III's.

As I have posted in the other thread, the iPhone's GPS doesn't provide any signal where my Nuvi 350 with SiRF III does. This is a real world comment and not one just looking at the specs. There's more to technology than the numbers that come from the factory.

Could be the antenna. The iPhone chip may be more sensitive, but the Garmin probably just has a larger/better antenna.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking too.

I thought we knew this already. The only thing that's stopping Tom Tom or Garmin to have maps for it is apple.
