My friend just got an iPhone the other day. He let me play around for it for a bit and i became fascinated with the fact that you have the internet in your hands, wherever you go! I already have a cell phone i am satisfied with so he suggested i get myself an ipod touch since I am in need of a decent mp3 player (crappy Toshiba Gigabeat S30 just doesn't cut it)
My question is. How similar is the internet browsing with the ipod touch and does the "3G speed" really make a difference. I am also wondering how easy it is to actually get a wi-fi signal on the ipod touch?
thanks

a wifi connection on a highspeed dsl/cable line will always be faster then 3g speeds. Browsing sites with safari will be identical though, since both the iphone and itouch uses the safari browser. sometimes 3g can be a pain in the arse.. Only half the time my 3g works and sometimes youtube videos will not load.. 3g speeds is much slower than a highspeed wifi connection, but if you compare it to a non 3g phone's internet, then the 3g connection is much faster. Don't compare wifi with 3g.. It's like comparing a honda civic to a ferrari enzo..

No you got it all wrong.
3G is the cellular network. It allows for much higher bandwidth than the old generation (2G).
WiFi is something completely different.
3G = cellular network, WiFi = wireless ethernet.
The browsing on the ipod touch will be identical to the iphone. Except you can only use it when you have access to a wifi hotspot, such as your wireless router at home.
And, as mentioned above, WiFi is much faster than 3G speeds. Benefit of 3G is that you will have internet access anywhere you have cellular service, instead of having to be close to a wireless router.Last edited by TakumiDC5; Aug 23rd, 2008 at 03:48 AM.

Surfing the Internet on my Touch is really usable via wifi.
You can also take advantage of location aware apps with wifi. It's not going to be as accurate as true GPS like of on the iPhone, but with the Maps app for example it's pretty accurate, surprisingly so.

one thing you need to know is that even though wifi is faster you need to be at a place that you can access it.
With "3G" you can access it preety much anywhere, however there is a charge for it. If you read in the hot deals forum there is 6GB for $30 a month which expires at the end of this month(reg $100)_______________

True it does depend on how much you need to access the Internet while you're on the go. That being said, you can find hot spots to get wifi access although you will need to pay for them. Some cities are better then others when it comes to this.

3G = You will always get the same speed and you can access the internet ANYWHERE.
Wifi = You need to find a wireless connection that you can get access to (hotspots) and then you can use the internet. Speeds may vary depending on what speed the host has.
