Definitely dont need cab then!

The tokyo transportation system is very convienent. Asking for directions is also much easier/friendlier then say Paris

Bullet train is not necessary, unless your heading out some where far like Kyoto, Osaka etc.

Even going from Tokyo to Mt Fuji, dont need bullet train, its mainly "local" trains

For traveling within Tokyo, transportation with JR lines and Tokyo metro should be fine.
You can get a SUICA or PASMO card and it should cover the entire Tokyo area. (Metro, trains, buses, monorail)

If planning on getting the day pass, just need to beware that the transportation under different companies are operated separately.
(ie. Tokyo metro day pass will not work on JR lines.)

Good luck on your trip planning. :)

I just found the mother lode for Japan discussion! Perfect, just need to read the thread and give my wife some ideas.

When does it make sense to take the bullet trains and when does it make sense to take the cabs or public transportation?
Bullet train if you have a rail pass, or are short on time. If not there are way cheaper price, more scenic sometimes, but it will generally take 3-5 times longer.

Transit is generally fine, except buses will sometimes get extremely slow due to trafic. If you have an underground option go for it (as i found out in Kyoto).

Are you coming from neighbouring country or actually flying from Canada?

I was going to do 4-5 nights from Canada but dreaded the 16 hours flight each way and thought such a short time then is not worth it.

From Taipei and will already be well adjusted to the climate and time difference.

Wow where do you go on these short trips?

Just a single city each time?

Depends. Mostly Tokyo. I fly 20 + times a year so cant' stay for more than couple of days at a place. Also these are business trips so that's the reason
