Job offer with the Ontario Public Service

Can you negotiate the starting pay band? How about vacation time? What about asking for a week off yearly without pay? Do they email you an offer letter?

There are some threads here in relation to starting pay but basically if you are earning higher now or close to starting pay in the ops position in your current job (i.e not the ops one) then you can ask for higher.

You get other days such as sick days, personal days and so on, so keep that in mind. The longer you stay with the ops the more of some of these days you get.

Granted haven't worked for OPS in a while but I remember not going into the calculations.

When starting out you get 15 day of vacation and 15 of sick days a year. After 4 or 5 years, it gets bump to 20 days a year. After 15 years, its increase to 25 days a year. When I work there, Vacations days are paid out at the end of the year while sick days aren't nor carry over. So you will see people taking more sick days than vacation time.

Depending on your level you may get OCP or overtime credit. We got 6 extra days a year.

Yes, you can negotiate salary, but not the benefits like VL and SL. I would suggest to ask for a higher salary because there are so many deductions (union pay, pension). And if you are unfortunate sometimes there are freeze salary increase by the union (it happened 2 years ago, there are no performance \ grid increase for 2 years).

15 sick days... OMG!

15 Vac days + 15 sick days. That's basically 1 month away.

I'm jealousy, but the job doesn't pay that well to start with...probably that balance it out.

Yes and no. The salaries are front loaded for the lower end positions. If you don't want to get into management, you well be better off working for the government than private in general. Trades are an exception.

This website says vacation changes in 10 years: http://content.eluta.ca/top-employer-ontario-government

Any source for 5 years?
Have the paper with the break down when I joined. Seems that it is different from unions/ non-union / management & administration. No, not going to dox myself. Plus, they temporary posted the days break down on LinkedIn for managers.

The Feds offer the same plus you get other leave such as personal leave, family related leave, you will get statutory holidays off as well. It can get up to 2 months in some places if statutory holidays are included and if you use all the other days.

So it's 5 years for non-union and managers, 8 years for union?

You forgot that some offices have Christmas and New Years shutdowns.
