Kanto Yumis + Phone for Internet radio Problem

My main issue is that I like having NPR radio on at home in my bedroom 24h/day.

I used to have have an old Internet Radio plugged in through RCA to my Kanto Yumis. That worked fine. That radio died so instead of buying a new Internet Radio, I recycled a chinese Android phone and now use TuneIn Pro.

What I have tried to connect the phone to the Kanto Yumis:

- Bluetooth: for some unknown reason, Tunein just goes away at some point (i.e. 10-15-20 hours). It just disappears from running on the phone.

- Chromecast Audio: can work for a while and then stops working. I also tried from a PC Chrome session with the same result.

- The most success I have had is with a direct connection through e 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable or a 3.5mm to RCA cable. I tried two phones and in both cases I get static on the speakers (with one phone it is a thudding noise (boom-boom-boom) and the other phone I tried just regular static).

Is there any way I can plugin the phone using the TOSlink entry? The only adapters I found with TOSlink to Minitolink 3.5mm which is not the same as the 3.5mm phone. Any other suggestions/alternatives?
