I went to the SC in Calgary on country hills. The guy told me the price was fixed!! 0 discount.
I asked him if he was willing to negotiate on the prices. And he said "how can I? The price is the price. What can I say, youre my brother in law?"
I just laughed at him and said good luck with that. You just lost a sale!
Calgary! Don't go to the country hills SC!!!!

Thanks for all your posts deal_king!
I went to one SC and was offered 5% off yesterday....what a joke!
We had a bit of time today between appts so we went to another SC and after doing research on your many posts we walked out just under the 65%. Worked out to $400!
Not bad considering we were thing go going the Costco route (prices were in our budget) last night to avoid the "no discount policy since prices are now all fixed on the computer", as per the salesman from the previous day.

You must have rubbed him up the wrong way to get that answer.
No one should expect to be offered a discount. You can't walk in and quote RFD, and you can't walk in and demand a discount. Whatever approach you choose basically needs to say that you are interested in one of their products, but at a fairer price than they are asking. At that point you'll know whether they are in a negotiating mood or not. Sometimes you need to do your homework to find out equivalent models and prices, and other times you need to be patient and return another day.
With my last SC purchase I started by saying that I know the prices are inflated because I have bought from them before (which was true). They opened negotiations at 30% off if I remember correctly, and never once mentioned the ticket price.Last edited by Evil Toast; May 25th, 2012 at 10:54 AM.

got my qs kingsdown strauss for 1190 taxes in with two pillows, protectors and mattress protector. This bed is incredibly comfortable, but I find it is very warm (not sure if it's because of my sheets, or protector)...anyone else find this?

As the negotiating "expert" of this thread, I can say that this is the absolute truth, yet you cannot imagine how many times I've seen people walk in and quote RFD. They always get shut down and booted out, and god forbid, blacklisted. I've even seen salesman take discrete photos of these people and email them to the other stores. I understand how some people may think that it might shortcut the process by quoting RFD, but it just doesn't work---RFD is their Enemy #1.
NEVER EVER quote RFD or prices that you saw on "an internet forum". Use RFD as a reference tool to find out how much you should be paying, but you must negotiate the price on your own._______________

What you are describing is an effect of memory foam toppers, either embedded on the top of the mattress, or one which you have added on your own. Memory foam retains heat- heat allows it to change shape. You need to create a breathable layer between you and the memory foam.
The ideal solution is as follows: get a allergy-proof cover for your entire mattress. Then I would suggest that you get a very thin memory foam and then a mattress topper made of a thick and loose weave of a breathable natural fiber - like cotton. As well, stick with sheets with 400 thread count or lower. Higher thread count sheets are smoother but they don't breathe, so you're likely to sweat and retain heat. Look for "cotton sateen" - you will love it._______________

Hi, We have been considering the Kingsdown Mona Lisa - it is one of their latex mattresses. Does anyone have experience with this mattress? Thanks

Looking at buying a Kingsdown Holiday and found this thread. They're on sale for just under $1800... seems like a good price to me. Thoughts? I was also thinking about getting a latex pillow, but I have no idea what they cost so i don't know if they are in my budget. :/

one thing lots of people forget is that Salesmen are people too. It's not always what most threads make salesmen to look like, where SC has a secret lair in the woods and they all scheme how to screw everyone over. I'm a manager at a bank branch and get our fair share of crappy nickel and dime clients. The logic is the same: if i like you, i'm that much more likely to help you.
I read this thread before going to shop for a mattress and am happy to say I just made my purchase this afternoon. SC is currently holding their Mix and Match sale, which means prices are already down from usual sticker price... although that says nothing about whether they're still inflated. Which I can assure you, they are. My tactic was to go in, being as likeable and friendly as possible, and tell the sales guy i just got married, moving to new place, have a billion things to buy and tight on budget and would genuinely appreciate his help. I let him know I already have a queen but wanted and upgrade and my budget was only around $1300, but if I can't get what I want, I might as wait and "save up" until I can afford something we like. I find this basically tells the salesguy the same message: "if i dont get what i want at the price i want, i'll walk"... but comes across as very different, much more polite, and puts them in the good guy position if they can help you, as oppose to the bad guy position if they don't. Deep down, most people wants to be a good guy.
I ended up buying the Kingsdown Holiday (king size) with box and 2 kingsize pillows for $1388.98 + HST (everything NEW, not demo stuff). This is down from the $2320.68 Mix & Match "discounted price". See the link of my receipt with picture of sticker I took at the store
http://www.flickr.com/photos/12516910@N06/7819232048/
We also looked at the Kingsdown Moritz and it's Mix & Match sticker price was around $1700 and when he heard my budget was $1300, said that he would most likely be able to do the Moritz for $1300, but might have to give us a demo box to get that price.
It was 4:50pm, they close in 10 mins and he saw I was still interested in the Holiday and offered it for $1500. I politely asked if he really can't do the Holiday for $1300 cause my wife really likes it and he can't, saying cheapest is $1470 (I don't know why he told me that)
Then, strangest thing happened... this fat dude comes in, interrupts us and asks if they have a specific cleaner, claiming he was told by someone to come to SC to buy it. He flipped out at my salesguy when he was told SC doesn't sell it, and went on about never buying from SC again because he had his bed from SC for only 5 yrs and its "breaking apart" (yes, all this in front of me, as I was trying to finalize my price with him...) Anyway, he stormed off like an angry bird when the SC salesman insisted no SC stores sells any cleaners.
I swear I couldn't have hired an actor and got a better result... after he left, I simply followed my tactic and sympathize with him, telling him I work retail and understand it sucks sometimes with clients like that. He was like "oh, you work retail? so you understand... *sigh*" I think that helped us build a better rapport.
I ended up asking him if I can get the Holiday for $1400, all new and no demo stuff, with pillows thrown in and free delivery... he agreed. Done deal.
Hope this helps you guys. Cheers.

$1800 is too much for the Holiday. Stick to the 65%off retail figure that has been discussed in this thread. You can reach it if you have good negotiating skills and take some of the advice from other people on here. We were able to purchase the King size Fitzgerald with box for less than $1800. With the proper negotiating skills, you should be able to get the King Holiday with box for slightly under $1200.

Currently, Chinook Mall Sears Canada is having a 50% off Kingsdown Hemingway (comparable to Duet Fitzgerald at Sleep Country) sale. The Kingsdown Hemingway mattress set list price is $3199.
We were able to negotiate a price with Sleep Country to purchase Kingsdown Duet Fitzgerald mattress set (mattress + box spring + frame + mattress cover) for $1259. Their list price is $3932, so we got 68% off with free frame & mattress pad. I went to Sleep Country after going through this thread and approached the sales people respectfully and never demanded a discount right away. We love the mattress and extremely happy with the price. It's being delivered on Wednesday next week. Good luck, RFD-ers!
p.s. If you don't want to deal with haggling, I would suggest that you go directly to Sears as their sale prices will keep getting lower -- (maybe even 60%?) -- until October 8th, 2012.
